The Gruesome Acts of Capitalism

Revised second printing of "Gruesome Acts" book!

About Me

THE ‘GRUESOME’ HISTORY:
The Gruesome Acts of Capitalism started out as a chapbook published in 1998 by SMARTEN UP! & Get To The Point Publishing, and was sold at Mecca Normal shows. This chapbook was later featured in the hardcover book ZINES (Booth-Clibborn Editions) in 2001. The book also was selected for the curated touring Bookmobile Project. The current edition published by Arbeiter Ring Publishing in Winnipeg, Canada came out in 2005 and a revised second printing in late 2006.
WHAT IS THE BOOK ABOUT?:
The Gruesome Acts of Capitalism is a beautiful book full of hard numbers. Located at the intersection of the statistical and the artistic, this catalog of corporate horrors—poverty, exploitation, and injustice—is a damning indictment of capitalism created with both love and rage. One in five American children live in poverty. One hundred, thirty-five million of the world's women and girls have undergone genital mutilation. In Bangladesh, an estimated 500,000 people are slaves. The amount of money spent on ice cream in Europe would be enough to provide reproductive health for all women in developing countries.
Illustrated by the author and with a preface by Mecca Normal band-mate Jean Smith. All author royalties are donated to the Canadian Centre For The Victims of Torture.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: mecca_normal.tripod.com
Band Members: Author: David Lester
Influences: Novelist Arundhati Roy:

“What can we do? We can reinvent civil disobedience in a million different ways. In other words, we can come up with a million ways of becoming a collective pain in the ass.”

“Our strategy should be not only to confront empire but to lay siege to it. To deprive it of oxygen. To shame it. To mock it. With our art, our music, our literature, our stubbornness, our joy, our brilliance, our sheer relentlessness—and our ability to tell our own stories. Stories that are different from the ones we’re being brainwashed to believe. The corporate revolution will collapse if we refuse to buy what they are selling—their ideas, their version of history, their wars, their weapons, their notion of inevitability. Remember this: We be many and they be few. They need us more than we need them.”
Sounds Like: Action.
