Music people say:
· “In all honesty, when the guys in Chris Plays Guitar set out to create their first full-length album, Relapse, I don’t think they really knew what they were doing. There was no motive, no theme, no marketing plan, no A&R guys, and no goals except to make a great record. With the help of producer/engineer genius Peter Wolf, they ended up with an album that not only makes sense as a whole but has many creative, witty and intelligent moments in each individual track.”
- Jeff King, Vernacular Magazine
· “Seeing CPG is like watching Rob Thomas completely drunk fronting The Replacements. It’s like watching Jacob Dylan front the Old 97’s with the guitarist from Motley Crue on leads. It’s like jerking off to a Dixie Chicks video. It’s a guilty pleasure that you don’t need to be drunk or with friends to enjoy, but it helps.”
- David Sanders, Fresno Weekly.
· “CPG was fortunate enough to bring in a number of talented musicians they admire to contribute to an album that’s a little rootsy, a little bluesy, and lots of rocking. Singer/songwriter Kat Jones, who Esquire Magazine noted is ‘a damned good songwriter,’ contributed her haunting yet eloquent vocals to two tracks; Respond Music recording artist and blues-rock guitar guru A.C. Myles laid down a blistering solo on ‘Name on a Tombstone’; And keyboardist Rick Wood added some drunk-and-punk style piano to the album. They know they’re in debt to these amazing people and seem to be forever in awe of their talent. I can’t imagine this album without their contributions.”
- Tommy Rosen, The Leftals guitarist
· “I have not found another band that makes me want to get in my car and drive through the desert in a rental Cadillac with the top down and too many chemicals running through my system the way CPG does.”
- Sarah Moore, Mesenchyme singer/guitarist
Fans say:
· “I once saw them sober and it turns out they’re also really good musicians.” - Amanda (SF)
· “Are they from Arizona or something?” - Erin (Fresno)
· “I think they ripped me off.” - Adam (Nashville, TN)
· “I’d fly 500 miles all over again to see them play.” - Tawni (Albuquerque, NM)
Etc.,
· Literacy has become something of a relic in modern music. CPG apparently didn’t get that memo.
· CPG has been described as tequila rock, post-cow-punk, nympho-rock, and drunkabilly.
· Patrick once drunkenly performed “Spoiled and Angry” with the chorus “Die die, death kill die, motherfuck this, motherfuck that” at a very conservative private party. The applause was minimal. However, he made five new fans and found CPG’s current bass player.
· CPG’s newest member and drummer Mike Whatley’s last band was ironically called “CFP.”
· CPG’s tech rider asks for a two liter of rootbeer, a box of twinkies, some play-doh, and any rubber ducks they can find. These requirements have yet to be fullfilled by any promoter or venue.
· Bassist Miguel Alejandro is probably too old to be in the band and therefore most easily made fun of. But he’s too good to find a replacement for.
· Patrick cut some guitar tracks on Relapse pantless.
· Peacemakers guitarist Steve Larsen told them “Really, if I didn’t like your band, I would have said ‘good set,’ and then walked away.”
· Patrick’s 1965 Fender Bassman is older than everyone in the band--except for Miguel.
· The owner of Tokyo Garden, a Fresno club, once said through a thick Japanese accent, “There are so much hot ass at you guys show!”
· CPG doesn’t believe in not rocking as hard as they possibly can.
