Vapor Rhinos on Happy the Clown's Dance Party
"One band where you get your money's worth, total bang for your buck, is the Vapor Rhinos. I don't think I ever have, in my capacity as the Journal rep, ever paid a cover to get in a club, but I couldn't get into Lucy's on Valentine's night without forking over the $3 because I was with too many people. Still, we certainly got our $3 worth.
First, you've got your great big, black-light, shine in the dark Vapor Rhino backdrop, of the band's logo, the gassy rhino, landing on the moon. Then you've got Peter Headley with short hair, a new, delightful sight. Then you've got all the familiar songs you know and love so well, like 'Beach Me a Whale' and 'Rat's Ass.'
Then you've got Peter's ear-splitting yelps, Tommy Rodriguez taking his custom guitar into the audience and standing on chairs, a pinata full of colored or flavored condoms, soon to burst all over the audience, and holiday underwear tossed into the crowd. You've even got topical songs as they already had a Monica Lewinsky tune.
The fog machine went off twice, once covering up the band, and the next time, enveloping the entire club so there was no longer any visibility or breathable air. This happened about six songs into the set, and we fell out, but I left with all that excitement, a red condom and a pair of jockey shorts festooned with hearts, a fully packed 30 minutes of entertainment. Now that's really rock and roll."
