If music be the food of love, play on!

About Me

I, Anatoli was born in Greece, on a hot July day under the star of Cancer and the rising sign of Leo.
I first demonstrated my artistic temperament when my parents took me to the small ballet school and then to the small music school of my tiny hometown. I learned to play guitar and later piano and made big success performing lead roles such as ‘’The ugly duckling’’ and ‘’The brave tin soldier’’!! As photos report, that’s where I must have had my first stage fright experiences – and where I must have decided that I didn’t care!! At the tender age of 15 I discovered my love for singing. And while the spirit killing torture called school was on its highlight, you would find me somewhere between singing with my first band Seisachtheia or in duet with my sister, writing lyrics and poetry, playing theatre and making dreams. When I moved to Athens to study Literature, the journey started. Ever since I have been studying singing and I have collaborated with the most various bands, choirs and musicians. After many successful and unsuccessful vocal experiments (like with classical music and rock...), I concluded that jazzy sounds with Latin flavour and some electro touch is exactly my case!
Four years ago I left sunny Greece, friends and family and moved to Berlin, ''to discover life'', as I explained to some friend (still trying to...) - and to write my Ph.D. on the intriguing question how a film units all art forms in one. God, Berlin can be such a hard place but also such an experience for someone trying to define oneself or/and chasing an artistic dream! My current music projects are: the band Beyond the lines (Latin, Jazz, blues and pop), the Bossa Lova Band (Bossa, Tango, World music, original compositions) and a very interesting collaboration with Stefan Bissart aka Sea Horse Appears (trip hop, ambient, experimental, www.myspace.com/seahorseappears). I also write my own songs and lyrics in English, French and Greek and gather forces to bring them to light one day. Of course I'm always interested in new musical challenges, so please be my guest :-)
I still spent a good part of my day taking dance classes. Well, no lead roles anymore... But a late discovered fascination for Jazz and Contemporary Dance and for their unlimited possibilities of voiceless expression. And I'm learning Tango and Salsa, which means how to balance on veeery high heels and not step on my partner... Hard work, believe me!
The journey has also brought me to acting. Me too, I feel a strong attraction to the film world (yes, me too...), so I study acting and go the Casting way. And I sometimes get homesick when we have to improvise a scene and I stand there clueless with my broken German... But so be it...
Other than this I'm fine, I love summer and chocolate, people are nice, life is beautiful and love is in the air!!!
More to come... Stay tuned!

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Sunrise (myself) and many musicians, each one unique:-)
Influences: Hmmmm... That's difficult. I like many artists and different kinds of music, pretty much everything from baroque to rock :-)
Some great female vocalists to name, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Julie London, Natalie Cole, Ellis Regina, Cesaria Evora, Astrud Gilberto, Carol King, Sade, Liza Minnelli, Björk, Whitney Houston, Lizz Wright, Souad Massi, Carol King, Stacey Kent, Eleftheria Arvanitaki.
And many bands, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Portishead, James, Massive Attack, Mandalay, Queen, Hooverphonic, Kosheen, U2, Radiohead, Mazzy Star, REM, Muse, Cure, Air, De-Phazz, Gotan Project, Depeche Mode, Jamiroquai, Scissor sisters, Police, Scorpions, Rolling Stones, Oasis etc.
And then Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Lenny Kravitz, David Sylvian, Phill Collins, Elton John, Ismael Lo, Herbie Hancock, Bob Sinclar etc.
But my biggest inspirations are: Classical music. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, romantic piano works that remind me of my sister, a gifted pianist. Greek art music and especially the music of Manos Chatzidakis, the absolute soundtrack of my homeland and my childhood. And there is a very special place in my heart for Michael Jackson. For the music, the voice, the passion on stage, the social commitment and the burden of being unique and the best by far.
And... moods, memories, the past, the future, tears, a rainy day, a promising summer night on a crowded island, scents, the sea, a fight, silence, sunset and the first lights of the city, jealousy, the end of my favourite book, ports and airports by night, time, goodbyes, Romanticism.

Sounds Like: Feel free to make your own associations:-)
