Winifred R. Harris’ Between Lines is a Los Angeles based contemporary dance company that strives to merge the issues of “right now†with the timeless power and beauty of sensual and technically exhilarating choreography. The company aims to give all people, regardless of economic status or cultural background, the opportunity to experience the beauty and expansive potential of dance; the company further wishes to create a dynamic focus in which people can challenge themselves by examining the issues that permeate and shape our lives today. Lewis Segal of the Los Angeles Times remarked in June of 2006, “This is a choreographer of great originality, authority, intensity, and daring. All she needs is enough support to make her performances integral to the community’s cultural lifeâ€. Since the company’s foundation in 1991, the work has touched upon a variety of racial, social, political, and humanistic issues, asking pertinent and valuable questions without revealing specific answers. The work has also explored the realm of dreams, illusion, fantasy, and the pure joy of movement. The element of mystery allows for the escapism and beauty of the theater to exist as an experience within itself and also amongst the deep topics that affect our lives.
The dancers in the company themselves represent cultural diversity and further manifest this vision through community workshops, public performances, residencies, and master classes that reach across all perceived boundaries. Through the continued journey of artistic expression, Between Lines communicates the importance of modern dance as an art form and further illuminates the possible transcendence of barriers between human experiences, often created by unconscious contention. “The path…chosen with dance is communication. It is beauty; it is a healing source for people to use, not only on the physical plane but also emotionally and psychically†(Venice, July 2000).
Winifred R. Harris’ Between Lines moves into the future with excitement in realizing this vision, as the dance continues to fully embody the relevance and power of the integrated self within the infinitely expansive community.
