In the year 2000, Ryan Stanley began creating ‘bedroom recordings’ in the truest sense. A Sears brand microphone, a tape deck, and an enthusiasm for creating lengthy sound collages were the unassuming start to an eventual songwriting passion.
Coincidentally, that same year, Ryan joined the Brantford, Ontario band, The Vermicious Knid. A member of the quartet until their amicable demise in 2006, he satisfied his more experimental musical urges by continuing to record at home in the bedroom.
His first release, 2003’s Nothing Left Unsaid, was an introspective eighteen-song album that demonstrated Ryan’s willingness to take musical risks. The noisy, experimental songs were sincere explorations of life with and without love, with a hint of self-deprecating humour. A sparse lot of handmade copies found their way into the hands and hearts of friends and musical contemporaries.
Let’s Start Our Own Parade, released by Toronto, Ontario’s Escape Goat Records, followed in 2004. This second record introduced a more layered and complex band-oriented sound into Ryan’s songwriting, while still offering moments of levity.
Ryan’s newest self-recorded release, This Mountain Is A Hill (Ford Plant Recording Co., October, 2006), is musically urgent and lyrically vivid. The songs are rich with emotion and delicate harmonies, and reflect the dynamic between Ryan and his wife and band mate, Jackie.
Ryan has shared the stage with some of Canada’s best independent musicians, including The Arcade Fire, Fembots, Wintersleep, and The Sourkeys.
While his recording techniques and equipment have evolved beyond the bedroom, the music will always encapsulate Ryan’s humble beginnings.
