Rolling Stone writer Toure’ proclaimed, “R. Prophet has a voice in Hip-Hop that comes around once every generation.” R. Prophet’s voice is unmistakably unique. His style and lyrical content wins fans over and makes him a true force in Hip-Hop.
In 1996, six students attending Western Kentucky University met and formed the group Nappy Roots. R. Prophet joined Skinny Deville, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, Big V and Fishscales to complete Nappy Roots. R. Prophet and Nappy Roots began creating their sound at ET’s Music, a record store/studio. They released their full-length debut Country Fried Cess in 1998. This independent effort caught the attention of several major labels, the group eventually signed to Atlantic records.
Their label debut, Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz, was released in 2002. This album includes the smash hits “Awnaw” and Grammy nominated “Po Folks” featuring Anthony Hamilton. R. Prophet created the concept for “Po Folks” as well as, wrote the hook and verse. This song was later awarded a BMI publishing award in 2002. Due to the overwhelming contributions R. Prophet and Nappy Roots have made to the state of Kentucky and abroad, Governor of Kentucky Paul E. Patton declared September 16, 2002 as “Nappy Roots Day”.
2006, has been an exciting and productive year for R. Prophet. R. Prophet is currently working on his solo album, “The Voice”, which is sure to go multi-platinum. His current single, “Run Tell the DJ”, produced by Mannie Fresh is heating up the airwaves all over the country and overseas. As a group, Nappy Roots is due to release a new album in Spring 2007, titled “The Humdinger”. R. Prophet is also the host of his own radio show, “The Streets are Talking”, on Radio One’s B96.5fm. The One-hour show showcases Kentucky’s top unsigned talent and discusses the issues surrounding the urban community.
