i am 31-year old grad student in American Studies working on my comprehensive exams in the following fields: oral history, whiteness studies, girls media and identity, and post-1970's feminist history. my dissertation is going to look at the cultural production of riot grrrl (zines, music, art, film, etc.) i just wrote an article on class and rural issues in hip hop via the lens of southern rapper, bubba sparxxx (pre-ms. new booty). if you google me you might found out that i'm the assistant editor for the second largest american studies journal. i taught women's studies at KU for three years. i am also the party pic photographer for lawrence.com. i also shoot weddings, portraits, and whatever else gets thrown my direction (naked anarchist calendar, concerts, band pics, landscapes, etc.) i used to write the riot grrrl-era zine alabama grrrl and now review zines for zine world and products/cds/books for feminist review. my zine collection and zine correspondence is archived at the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture collection at Duke University. i used to book shows in pittsburgh and auburn and do it occasionally in lawrence.
for a long time my identity was wrapped in my activist work. these days grad school keeps me busy so i keep active by shooting photos at protests, marches, and rallies. i might as well use my skills. i've done alot of activist work in the last 15 or so years: i protested the sanctions in iraq (clinton-era), organized take back the night marches in pittsburgh, protested bush's 1st inaugeration in DC, organized reclaim the streets-styled street parties, organized the people's rally and rally against the FTAA in kansas city, put out the disorientation guide at KU, organized the 2001 southern girls convention in auburn, al, organized the 2002 plan z: a conference for radical wimmin and trannies in tennessee, organized the 2002 north american anarchist gathering, done jail support for protests, still have a penpal in alabama prisons and consider myself somewhat of a prison abolitionist, organized vigils to protest gay bashing, participated in marches for immigration rights, protested this war and that war and the next war, organized a radical queer reading group, organized a feminist reading group, worked on the Clamor Magazine advisory board, was a founding member of solidarity! helping organize the mother earth collective library and raise our then very tiny $200 rent, attended women's health discussion group at the mother earth collective/solidarity for years and years... and the list goes on.
intimidated yet? i get that alot. but i am so very chill. i like to drink good pints of beer and go to shows and watch bad tv and see movies and play pinball and ride my bike and relax. and i'm actually quite approachable. really.
