Combining the big band sentiments of western swing with the slap and smack of rockabilly roots, Gleny Rae Virus and her Tamworth Playboys put the swing back into country music.
One half of the well traveled Toe Sucking Cowgirls (Golden Guitar finalists), Gleny Rae Virus has assembled a fine group of swingin’ playboys to create a vamped up version of the dance hall days. All the style of the 40s and the fizz of the 50s is harnessed then spiced up with fresh interpretations and original songs. The Tamworth Playboys are a clever combination of Newcastle guitarist Marty Moose and bullfiddler Dougie Bull (from the international busking success story, The Lairs) and Toe Sucking Cowgirls regulars Grant Bedford (drums) and Ray Cullen (pedal steel). Combined with the swingin’ fiddle and squeezebox talents of Gleny Rae Virus, this outfit has all the ingredients to cook up a sizzling platter of classy country canapés.
Gleny Rae Virus and her Tamworth Playboys launched onto the country scene at the 2006 Tamworth Country Music Festival. The six day residency at the Southgate Hotel consistently filled the room and produced rave reviews.
Gleny Rae has 15 years of country music experience, performing with Rob Luckey and the Luckey Bastards, Gatorbait, The Junes, Billy Bridge, Fiddlers Festival, Red Hot Poker Dots, The Re-mains, Leslie Avril and The Yee-haa Boys.Their debut album High Rollin' will be out from December 1, and the band is touring the east coast, Victoria and Adelaide over the following six weeks.
Special mention must be made of The Fuelers bass player and artist extraordinaire, Ed Radclyffe, who created the enigmatic playing cards.
