About Me

From the Blue Ash Music Bio

Frank Secich was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania on June 14, 1951. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood on the south side of Sharon and as a kid loved the songs of Buddy Holly and Johnny Horton. The first record he ever bought was "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" by Elvis, but seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 changed his life. Soon after he started playing the harmonica and in 1965 got his first guitar after seeing Bob Dylan perform at Cleveland's Music Hall. In 1966, Frank along with future Blue Ashers and school-mates, Jim Kendzor and Jeff Rozniata, started their first semi-serious group "The City Jail". Playing parties, teen dances and church socials doing Kinks, Animals, Beatles and Rolling Stones covers "The City Jail" would prevail until 1967. Later that year, it was on to "The Great Hibiscus" a psychedelic lunatic asylum which in turn and sequence hallucinated into the infamous "Mother Goose Band". (The last singer of Mother Goose in the early 1970's, would be the one and only Stiv Bators). Blue Ash 1969 photo by Darla Bartolin Jim Kendzor, Frank Secich, David Evans and Bill "Goog" Yendrek

After leaving Mother Goose in June, 1969, Frank and Jim Kendzor went to Nashville (where they wrote the song "Don't Go To Nashville!") and upon returning started Blue Ash. Rounding out the group were Bill "Goog" Yendrek on lead guitar, David Evans on drums and legendary local artist, Chuck Borawski on bass. At the last minute Chuck painted himself into a corner and was never seen again, so Frank switched from oboe to bass guitar. Blue Ash debuted in the fall of 1969 and gained a steadfast following in the tri-state area. After their first guitarist tragically disappeared in 1970 (amidst rumors of Spontaneous Human Combustion) Frank called songwriter and guitarist Bill "Cupid" Bartolin and asked him to join Blue Ash. Frank and Bill immediately hit it off and started writing pounds of songs. In 1972, Blue Ash signed with Peppermint Productions of Youngstown and shortly after they were signed to a recording deal with Mercury Records by legendary A&R man and rock writer Paul Nelson.

The first Blue Ash album "No More, No Less" was released in 1973. Throughout the next year Blue Ash toured extensively. Much of the years 1974-1976 were spent on the road and in the recording studio and culminating with their second LP "Front Page News" being released on Playboy Records in 1977. Blue Ash called it off in 1979 after 1200 live performances, writing over 1000 songs and recording (at last count) 219 of them. Most remain unreleased and unheard today.Blue Ash 1974 photo by Geoff Jones Frank Secich, Jim Kendzor, Bill Bartolin, and Jeffrey Rozniata Blue Ash In Concert 1977 photo by Scott Pickard

In October of 1978, Frank started writing songs with old friend Stiv Bators. They were signed to Bomp Records in 1979 and released three singles "It's Cold Outside", "Not That Way Anymore" and "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)" in addition to the LP "Disconnected" over the next two years. 1979-81 was also spent touring North America with various Dead Boys line-ups. Frank was in a short-lived reformation of Blue Ash with George Cabaniss and David Quinton (of the Disconnected Band) along with Eddy Best and Jim Kendzor in 1981. At the beginning of 1982 he joined "Club Wow" in Cleveland which included Jimmy Zero, Billy Sullivan and Jeff West. Club Wow released only one single "The Prettiest Girl". Club Wow lasted until 1985 when it dissolved and disappeared. Club Wow left behind some great recordings, "Norman Green" and "You Don't Go Away" to name what some would call two.CLUB WOW 1984 "live" at the Phantasy in Cleveland Billy Sullivan, Jimmy Zero and Frank Secich

In 1985, Frank decided to try his new head behind the board and produced the wonderful Infidels' single "Mad About That Girl" b/w "A Thousand Years Ago." He produced another 45, an EP and two LP's for the Infidels over the next 5 years. During that time he also produced tracks for Hard Luck, The Dead Boys, The Upside Downs and Kashmyre. Frank disappeared to live quietly in 1990. Today, he lives LOUDLY in Hermitage, PA with his wife, Lisa and son, Jake.

In 2004, a 2CD retrospective of 44 previously unreleased Blue Ash songs called "Around Again" was released on Not Lame Records. The original Blue Ash line-up got together for the first time in 25 years and played a half dozen gigs in Philadelphia, Youngstown and Cleveland. Also, in 2004, Frank wrote the liner notes for the Bomp Records reissue of Stiv Bators "Disconnected" album and "LA Confidential" which is a compilation of Stiv's Bomp singles and rare recordings.Throughout 2006 and into 2007, Frank has been recording with old friends Terry Hartman, Pete Drivere and John Koury. They will release an album in the summer in 2007. They're called "The Deadbeat Poets".The Deadbeat Poets.... My Interests

Classic guitars, history, films, record collecting, songwriting

I'd like to meet:

The remaining cast of the 1966 film classic " The Oscar" especially Tony Bennett (Hymie Kelly) and Jill St. John (Laurel Scott).

MEMORABLE QUOTES FROM

The Oscar (1966)

Frankie: I never said anything about creaming Barney Yale.
Hymie Kelly: Birdseed!

Frankie Fane: Will you stop beating on my ears! I've had it up to here with all this bring-down!

Frankie Fane: Are you a tourist or a native?
Kay Bergdahl: Take one from Column A and two from Column B. You get an egg roll either way.

Hymie Kelly: You finally made it, Frankie! Oscar night! And here you sit, on top of a glass mountain called "success." You're one of the chosen five, and the whole town's holding its breath to see who won it. It's been quite a climb, hasn't it, Frankie? Down at the bottom, scuffling for dimes in those smokers, all the way to the top. Magic Hollywood! Ever think about it? I do, friend Frankie, I do...

Kay: Sometimes I get the feeling, Frankie, you ought to be chained up with a ring in your nose.

Frankie Fane: Tell 'em "game called on account of Oscar."

The Dead Boys live show really set the bar high for punk bands. They were unpredictable, raw and menacing, all with a sense of humor. So, if you're Stiv Bators, coming from that legacy, how can you top it? You get a teenager to be the driving force of this near-train-wreck! That's young David Quinton on the drums, propelling the pandemonium that was unleashed when Dee Dee Ramone jumped on stage. But it that wasn't enough... Stiv had already kept the crowd waiting. Impatient to perform, the band just hit the stage without him. That fantastic first chiming guitar sound of the Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" opened the show. Luckily, Jimmy Zero was on hand to up the pop factor with Frank Secich. (Let's not forget they had a George Harrison on guitar in this band, too!) Their Fab Four harmonies were interrupted by Stiv when he came to the stage wrapped in a towel and proceeded with his toilette, shaving and then blow-drying his hair, and getting into his skin tight red leather jeans without removing the towel around his waist. At the point in the show when this photo was taken, all hell had broken loose and Frank's making fun of the whole thing while watching from his perch on the drum riser, and using Stiv's hair dryer for full comic effect.More at http://punkturns30.com from Theresa Kereakes
