About Me

Everybody should really be reading and thinking about Nick Southall's article on the loudness war. I'm in the process of reconsidering not only most of my mixes, but the very way I listen to music and you listen to music and that guy on the subway is listening to music. It's that good. I wish I'd read it as soon as it came out.All of the music you hear coming from the player right now is all my fault.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: thejamesrocket.com
Band Members: James.
Influences: So I wake up in the morning, feed the cats if they haven't been fed, feed myself, hop on the train and ride from Brooklyn to Manhattan. If I've done all that early enough, I stop at the gym and try to work off some of the ill effects of my sedentary job and immoderate drinking. Then I go to work, where I sell beautiful things that I will never be able to afford to people who can spend on a whim what I earn in a year. After that, some nights, I get on the train to another part of town and and rehearse with my band. Some nights I take the train straight home. If I'm lucky I'll spend a few hours in the company of my wife before she and I pass out from exhaustion. Sometimes I get a little songwriting done somewhere in there. If I'm really lucky, I'll get a weekend day to myself to do some recording. Are those the influences you mean? Are they not enough?
Sounds Like: what most music sounds like on these little computer speakers we're all listening to our music on now. Go to The James Rocket to download a few of the songs and arrange to hear them on a proper stereo.

HEY, KIDS! LET’S THROW A PARTY!

In the end, you can't really say you've thrown a house party unless you get at least one noise complaint. I want to serenade you all. If you're in the five boroughs, or within maybe 3 or 4 hours drivi...

Gearheadiness

The first song I ever wrote was a charming little jazz waltz. I don't think it ever got recorded. The first songs I ever recorded were with a snotty little college band, and we recorded them to casset...

REVELATIONS

What is my revelation? It is this: mp3s really fucking blow. Honestly. I'd long heard people grump about how mp3s lost sound quality vis-a-vis cds, and I'd largely pooh-poohed it. So what! Sounds fin...

All The Songs In My Shoeboxes

I've got some CDs in the works. Three, actually. One is old: I did a tape back in '94 called Birthday Girl. I had no idea how to get it out and around, so I wound up duping maybe twenty of the things ...

Gigs & Flyers

I understand that The Minutemen had things boiled down so that what they did, everything they did, as a band, could be classified as a Gig, or a Flyer. Gigs were what you were working to do - they wer...
