I am here for Friends

About Me

I live just north of the Great Dismal Swamp and I love thrift shopping and honky tonking. By day I'm an animal activist and by night I'm a writer (my book, Committed: A Rabble-Rouser's Memoir just came out in paperback on Atria/Simon & Schuster - read some reviews here ). I dislike TV, especially reality TV, and anyway life is more fun to live as a participant than as a voyeur. Gotta go!

Benjamin Lay, "the rebellious gnome” (1681-1760). He was a four foot tall hunchback who was so distraught by slavery and animal cruelty that he shunned city life and lived in a cave near Philadelphia. He made his own clothes to avoid supporting slave labor as well as the killing of animals for their fur or leather, and refused to eat meat or other animal products. He occasionally ventured into the city to rant at public meetings about the hypocrisy of a supposedly religious society embracing such vicious practices, once thrusting a sword into a hollowed-out bible filled with fake blood, which he then sprayed onto the faces of shocked slave owners. Although considered a pariah by colonial society, he persuaded Benjamin Franklin to publish some of his tirades.
