Energy ground down in two. Please, it's time, closing!" Sidewalks and streets by billions of feet & tires erupt from manholes & tunnels, break out with volcanic force. Let it come down careening subways faster and faster stations blur by. Pan whips screaming crowds with flaming pipes. Millions of faces look up at the torn sky. Off the track! Off the track! The planet is pulling loose from its moorings, careening off into space spilling mountains and cities and seas into the void, faster and faster. Skyscrapers scrape shards of blue and white paint from the sky. The rivers swirl with color. Nitrous okras and reds eat through the bridges, falling into the rivers. **Cut-ups***
A simple cut-up is done by slicing a page of writing into pieces, rearranging them and reading the resulting text. The cut-ups were brand new because the words were treated like mere material, like the images they are and treated in a painter's creative way rather than a writer's metaphysical view of language as the lesser part of speech. Fresh juxtapositions always emerge from a cut-up process and while, in some cases, they may have no immediately discernable meaning, in others the words jump together creating new phrases and new meanings. As Gysin and Burroughs plunged further and further into the cut-up world an occult linguistics emerged. Under the blade the pages spoke.The cut-up procedure was not presented only as an avant garde literary technique. This was a tool for everyone: "Words have a vitality of their own and you or anybody can make them gush into action." Here was a tool of liberation, and more than words were liberated. Gysin and Burroughs saw people's minds as being controlled through the word and image lines thrown out by the mass media to lasso awareness and tie it to conventional responses. Cutting through the word lines is a way to "storm the reality studio," a way to get OUT. ("Word falling - Photo falling - Breakthrough in the Grey Room.") It was a way to get out beyond conventional thinking, out into a space where new perceptions were possible. We began to find out a whole lot of things about the real nature of words and writing...What are words and what are they doing? Where are they going? The cut-up method treats words as the painter treats his paint, raw material with rules and reasons of its own... Abstract painters found that the real hero of the picture is the paint. Painters and writers of the kind I respect want to be heroes, challenging fate in their lives and in their art. What is fate? Fate is written: Mektoub means "It is written." So ... if you want to challenge and change fate ... cut up words. Make them a new world. It is to remember that all art is magickal in origin - musicK, sculpture, writing, painting - and by magickal I mean intended to produce very definite results. Paintings were originally formulae to make what is painted happen. Art is not an end in itself, any more that Einstein's matter-into-energy formulae is an end by itself. Like all formulae, art was originally functional, intended to make things happen, the way an atom bomb happens from Einstein's formula. Take a porcelain stove and disconnect it and put it in your living room with ivy growing over it... it may be a good-looking corpse but it isn't functional anymore. Or take a voodoo doll full of pins - authentic West African, $500 on 23rd Street - and hang it on the wall of your duplex loft. It isn't killing enemies anymore, and the same goes for a $5,000 shrunk-down head, which a fashionable shrink bought for his consultation room.
