About Me

Gubment Cheese started from humble roots as an acoustic duo in and around the Hagerstown MD area. J Parks formerly of Fewer Guru and Sean Grove formerly with Josa Step, had teamed up to have a bit of fun playing around the area. One day J booked a show at a local bar that was a bit too large to be friendly to a small acoustic act and decided that some help would be necessary. So to the blower he went to see if any of the wealth of local talent would be interested in helping out for this gig. Well to his surprise, indeed there were some folks willing to help out. A six headed monster was born... Along with J on acoustic and electric rhythm guitar and Sean with the groove and pocket playing on electric bass, the group is rounded out by Trent Renshaw on drums, and Rob Adair on lead guitar
Trent Renshaw is a very talented drummer and drum instructor, playing with bands like The Backroads Blues Band and Teach, Trent has honed his drumming to a fine, jazz influenced edge, truly a local talent we are grateful to have found.
Sean Grove is the true mastermind behind The Sound. Bringing tight pocket playing and slackjawed groove mechanization to the group with apparent ease, his playing is reminiscent of some lost era. Truth be told we all miss his flowing Jebediah Springfield. The gleam in his wooden eye makes up for the loss of 1000 rainbows. Puppies and old ladies praise him for his gentle hands and warrior's spirit. Using an innate sense of rhythm and a boundless supply of energy, he nails the bottom to the floor for this exploration of deep space and beyond.
Rob Adair, best known for his pyrotechnics on the bass guitar with Fewer Guru, Five Dollar Fine, The John Doe Project and Teach, is using the opportunity as lead guitar player to fulfill the wish to play 6 string guitar that he has harbored since he was in high school. His style is reminiscent of some of the jam band greats, with heavy rhythmic progressions and screaming leads, he keeps the group as edgy as they want to be. p.
J Parks, rhythm guitar and vocals, is the de facto leader and proud papa of this musical brainchild. His experience with the jam band genre stretches back to the late 80's when an encounter with the Grateful Dead changed his life as he knew it. J has been playing guitar and singin for close to 20 years, formerly a member of such groups as Hose, MUMP, Fewer Guru and the Godawful Spoonbenders, as well as the formerly vaunted Petrified Sandwich. J is currently involved in The Jparks Trio, The Parks / Grove Duo, Gubment Cheese and The Friday Night All-stars. . If you make it to the Hag-town, do not miss the soulful sounds and rosy glow of this freak of nature!
Often found with special guests on various instruments, this group is tearing up their world with a heady mix of original tunes and tasteful covers. The Cheese is loose, and looking for new ground to cover!
