By transforming the flute’s role in the contemporary musical landscape, Torres has practically established a new genre of popular music. Torres was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. He took flute lessons at age 12 and began formal studies at the Escuela Libre de Música, eventually attending Puerto Rico’s Inter-American University. At 18, he moved to New York with his family. Torres went on to study both jazz and classical music at the Mannes College of Music in New York and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, among other places. He moved to Miami in 1981, and signed with PolyGram, where he released Morning Ride in 1989. His major label debut climbed quickly to the top of the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts and soon brought him widespread acclaim.His current release Dances, Prayers & Meditations For Peace released on Heads Up International on April 25, 2006, is Torres' musical appeal to humanity, his call for people everywhere to rise above the petty distractions that separate us and embrace the universal elements that unite us.Consumed by a mixture of shock and grief in the aftermath of 9/11, Torres traveled to New York City in September 2001 to meditate and perform in various houses of worship near Ground Zero. "It was my intention to be a conduit for whatever energy was present in the city at the time, and channel it into music that could transform grief to acceptance, anger to courage, and despair to hope."
