Saturday
Once a month on a Saturday I am upstairs at the Whitehouse. The whitehouse now plays host to Southampton's best student night on the weekend. The Academy serves up the best student party vibes, in two rooms, with cheap drink prices at the bar.Through his musical versitality and sheer inititive, Philly H is always able to please a crowd. Since forming Dub Connection his talents have only increased, and now combining with the other artists they have created a dominant force within the South's music scene.
Philly H tries to display all of his musical influences within all of his sets, these primarily being both funky and electro house, uk garage, r&b and hiphop.
Based in Southampton and at the young age of 19, Philly H has an outstanding background of experience within the music industry, and found himself DJing at top venues around the UK when he was just 15 years old.
Phil Horrocks (aka Philly H) first became interested in DJing at the age of 12. He was introduced to the art by a close friend Alex Witham. Alex gave Phil his first taste on the wheels of steel and from that moment on determination and goals set in. Phil spent the next two years doing what he could to save money in order to start out his learning on the best equipment possible.
At the age of 14 Phil purchased his first set of Technics SL1200 and from that moment forward he dedicated whatever free time he could to learning the skill that is mixing.
After sixth months of practice and tuition from Alex Witham, Phil felt confident to start promoting himself and still at the age of 14 he entered himself into the DMC Young UK DJ 2002 competition. After intense qualifying rounds Philly H was able to qualify for the regional final of the competition. Sadly for Philly H, he just missed going through coming a well deserved 3rd.
This competition saw Philly H beaten by DJ Armstrong, who is now a well established and highly credited music producer, as well as DJ Viney, who Philly H has now formed Dub Connection with. (myspace/dubconnections).
Dub Connection are currently residents, with team players at the whitehouse every friday night for Student Fridays. As well as being residents for thursdays pimped at the porthouse in winchester.
However, at this young age Phil had done enough to impress the owners of the venue where the competition was held. From then on he began to perform at the under 18's night at Ikon, Southampton and was able to gain some crucial experience.
A year on from failing to get through the regional finals of the DMC Young UK DJ 2002 competiton, Philly H decided to re-enter the competition and found success. The DMC Young UK DJ 2003 competition saw 'Philly H' storm through the qualifying and regional rounds, and he found himself heading to Crawley to compete in the quarter-finals of the contest. With only 10 minutes to prove himself, the 15 year-old was able to squeeze in 8 songs of the r'n'b/hiphop and funky house genres. Judges were highly impressed by Phil and they chose him to come first and go through to the semi-finals of the competition. Unfortunately, that was the end of the line for Philly H as he was unable to attend the semi-final rounds.
Also in 2003, Philly H entered another DJ competition. The 'Oxy DJ Championships' were held in various venues around the country and this competition saw Phil make his way into the final, after impressing the 15 judges and getting an outstanding reaction from the crowd at Escape (aka Audio) in Brighton. Once again Philly H was only to be meet by the disappointment of not being able to attend this final.
From this stage on Philly H choose not to enter anymore DJ competitions and just focussed on improving his ability and continously promoting himself in anyway he could. By the time he reached 17 Philly H was already DJing in some of the biggest clubs in Southampton.
Now, still only 19 years old, Phil is gradually earning a solid reputation as one of the youngest and best DJs around the South.Since being an established DJ, Philly H has opened for the likes of DJ EZ, DJ Pied Piper, Matt Jam Lamount, Artful Dodger, BossNass, DJ Spoony, J Sweet, Ldot Man, Aaron Soul...
Although primarily focusing on r'n'b and hiphop, Phil also can cater for most tastes.
His genre abilities range from;
-R'N'B
-Hip Hop
-Garage
-Drum 'n' Bass
-Funky House
-Electro House
