The Burmese Goodwill Assistance Project is an opportunity for all of us to lend a hand to those who need it in the world's most oppressive government, Burma, also known as Myanmar. A series of bloody military coups has marred Burma's history, and Than Shwe, leader of the current military regime, called the State Peace and Development Council, keeps the Burmese people isolated from the rest of the world using fear and violence.
The indigenous Karen (pronounced Kah-rin) tribespeople, often known for their ritual of stretching the women's necks with metal rings, are being systematically annhilated by the SPDC. As a result, the people live in fear and constantly on the run, leaving little time for a standard of life to be established, let alone any system of education or health care.
The Burmese Goodwill Assistance Project, or BGAP, brings items necessary for collapsable, portable schools to the children of Burma. Through fund-raising, we strive to bring books, chalkboards, rough frame buildings, and willing teachers to the impoverished areas. Education is a basic right given to all of us through the Declaration of Human Rights, art. 26 , and we all have the resources available to help.
Anyone who is willing to help, willing to pass the information along, willing to look outside for just a moment and see there is more out there than we know.
