BIO
Born In Adelaide, South Australia, Selena Cross grew up with a musical family and learned to play piano by ear at the age of 5. Practicing at 'Nana Annie's' house with the only piano around at the time, the weekend visits to Semaphore were some of the fondest memories Selena recalls. "I think the piano needs tuning!", Selena would exclaim every weekend. This was however an excuse to have the piano tuner come, just so she could hear him play at the end of the tuning session.
"I would watch him, look at his hands and posture, and notice how his fingers would dance like butterflies up and down the keys. I eagerly waited for the dramatic Low C, High C final chord! When he left, I would play frilly '5 year old' made up symphonies. It sounded awful, but I would always try to get the Low C, High C ending just right."
Selena's passion for music and drive never wavered and in 1998 she moved to Melbourne with a demo of her original songs in hand. In search of a listening ear, and she found many, she met Buzz Bidstrup (The Angels, Gangagang) who would go on to produce 'Strip', Selena's first CD.
'Strip', with its earthy/acoustic pop style, was picked up by GCG Music (US) in 2003. This distribution deal introduced Selena Cross to the US and Canadian market and with an ever growing global online audience 'Strip' was soon being enjoyed internationally thanks to iTunes, Amazon.com and CDBaby. With a fan base growing all over the globe, but not concentrated in any one place, Selena decided it was the right time to start a family with husband and sound designer Paul Hitchens.
One more project Selena squeezed in before the birth of her son was a cover of 'Land Down Under' for the 2004 compilation release 'Women At Work'. For the production Selena chose renowned Australian songwriter and producer Richard Pleasance.
"I was heavily pregnant at the time, so Richard and I were emailing each other mp3's back and forth. I remember being insistent on one thing.... no flute! I didn't see the point in regurgitating the original, and Richard has such a great style, I wanted that to shine too!" Selena recalls.
One day after recording the vocals, and just in time to be sent off for mixing by Franc Tetaz (Autumn Flow, Lior), Selena went into labour (2 weeks early!!) and gave birth to a son.
Now, after time off dedicated to raising Sam, Selena is back with her new follow up EP 'The Meaning In Sunnyville'. Also produced by Richard Pleasance, it shares the continuing journey in Selena's career. After just 1 week ' The Meaning In Sunnyville' hit the Martian Music charts at number 3, while lush tracks 'There You go Again' and award winning 'Do As The Angels Do' sit at numbers 1 and 2 respectively (12/12/06).
Selena is in rehearsals with her new band and will be bringing her music to a STAGE NEAR YOU in 2007!
