The Mavericks was founded year 1992 in Tampere. Since then the main idea of this fellowship has been as simple as having fun. In the beginning the activities organized were numerous parties among members. During this period some of the members still lived outside Tampere. As old members stepped aside new ones joined. Although some members were no longer a part of â€the gangâ€, the friendship remained. This was because all the members had known each other for a very long time, even before the Mavericks.
The members have always been easy to recognize, because of the black – yellow –sleeve badge and similar baseball –jackets. In the beginning the colour of the jacket was purple, but the Mavericks were forced to change the colour into black, because the purple colour was no longer available.
The next milestone in the history of the Mavericks was the more or less legendary Chopper Bar in Tampere. Together with other socially strange population groups the Mavericks monopolized this bar and made it profitable. The Mavericks were almost a part of the furniture at the bar. Whenever you went to the Chopper Bar, you could always find at least one member there. If this member wasn’t sleeping at the table, there was at least one behind the bar serving drinks. The biggest advantage at Chopper was, that it was a great place to have crazy parties. Many parties were organized before the bar finally went bankrupt. Chopper Bar was also a foster home for members, you could always go there, even to get some sleep. In addition to having fun themselves, the members started also to entertain other people by organizing parties etc. In these events new contacts were made, also to other cities besides Tampere.
When Chopper Bar didn’t exist anymore, the members felt almost abandoned, without a place to go. At first the Mavericks monopolized a small bar called Old Corner’s, but like Chopper Bar, it soon went bankrupt. Finally the Mavericks went under ground, and a new place was found. This place was located beneath street level, and was called Music Bar Rocks. Rocks experienced numerous evenings with the Mavericks, either behind or in front of the bar. At the moment the members are again without a regular bar, but Bar Räpärällää with many live bands offers a choice when thinking of where to go.The Mavericks members have during these years also messed around with sports. The first football games were played between other subcultures and were mostly playful and very drunken –but sometimes also bloody. Later on even matches between company teams were played and for this special game t – shirts were purchased. Although the national league –level was never reached, a sponsor was found and at least a few games were won.At the end of year 2002 radical changes occurred among members. A part of the old members stepped aside because of personal reasons, but a few new members joined as you can see from the members –section. We have closed ranks a bit and at the same time the area of operation will be more specific and effective. The goal is to organize yearly a couple of bigger events and a few smaller ones, such as concerts, transportation to parties in Finland etc.
