Sounds Like: The Hoist!!The story starts on year 2003, when Iiro and Kontra started to plan performing an Oi!-Punk-band while jamming with guitar and drums. It came clear quite soon, that they would have to find a singer. It took one call to a friend and the singer was found. At the same trainingflat played a psychobillyband, whose slapbass-player heard Iiro, Kontra and Miikka play covers from GBH and Blitz. Through inspire of being under the influence of alcohol, this bass player was soon jamming along with the guys and shortly Toni noticed he had become a member of the band. Slapbass switched to regular bass and the bunch chose it’s name, The Hoist.
Pretty soon after this they had their first gig at a local Oi!-party, warming up Superyob and as a surprise to all, the gig went well for the newbies. After this there’s been rarely gigs, but those with magnificent leadbands, such as ArgyBargy, On File, Crashed Out and with many good Finnish street punk/punk/Oi!-punk-bands.
As writing this, the first official publication has just come out. Earlier has been made “Demo 2004” and a promotional cd. Whilst mastering “Pretty Sue is Dead”, Kontra had grown tired of the band and decided to leave. The new drummer was found amongst friends. He hadn’t played in three years and had about two months to learn the set before a new gig. Ropo has owned his place as a drummer, the gig went very well and three new songs gave birth while practicing.
Very few believed in Ropo before the gig, he came down with measles when he was 2 years old and as a backwash to a sevear rheumatoid-arthritis, which badly delimits his movement. But clearly NOT playing drums. We believed, Ropo believed and now everyone believes!
Ropo’s coming to the band brought (maybe already expected?) change, the songs are now more straight-forward and sound more like so called “oldschool” punk/Oi!-punk. Ropo is also the youngest member of the band, being 30 years old, when the average age for the rest of the band is about 35. So it is not exactly a teen band.
This band has formed as a result of having fun, relaxing and of course boozing on the weekends, and it will follow that line in the future as well. The Hoist has a lot of influences, mainly from the 80’s UK-punk/oi!-punkbands. The bands politics come from everyday life as labouring and being unemployed and pushed around by the society…All the boys come from the working-class, and the Hoist is not in any case or in any way racist/nationalistic
…Yes, you can categorize The Hoist as ”Punk rock for the middle-aged” We do what we have to do; follow our hearts...
Cheers n’ Oi!
