.. After being rescued from a foster home in Brooklyn, I was raised by a group of Irish immigrants. When I was a little boy, Ma (Ellen Coughlan) took me to a place in Rockaway Beach called The Irish Circle. It was there that I saw a gifted drummer on a 4 piece Ludwig set. That is one of the fondest memories of my life. Not long after that, I got hold of some drums. My old man (Jimmy Coughlan) listened to the Dubliners and watched Hee-Haw. That's where the banjo began for me.
When the Marine Corps sent me to Okinawa for a year, I made the mistake of leaving my banjo in the states. That was my longest stretch of time away from the banjo since I began playing.
I freelance as a session musician here in NYC and am a member of Local 802 AFM. My 1980 Ode banjo has been used in national television commercials for companies such as Volkswagen and Wal-Mart. For me, playing music is like talking with God.
I also work as a visual artist. My clients include Ralph Lauren, Macy’s, The New York Post, Metro, Newsday, Bloomberg and the Daily News. There are examples of my work on the Johnny Jackpot site.
