"Songs To Sail By" CD Release Show, June 19th!

About Me

Meghan Coffee is a five foot two, eyes of blue, former tomboy who now loves red lipstick, is pessimistically hopeful, feels too much, songer/singwriter with a penchant for old postcards...and chocolate... and Newcastle Brown Ale.

(It's how she maintains that svelte figure).

She was born to parents who worked in the theatre, became the big sister to three more siblings, was given a piano when she was eight, lost her mother when she was thirteen, was married at twenty, was blessed to be a mother at twenty-two, and divorced at twenty-eight. Throughout those years she was always with pen and paper in hand, writing the words and singing the melodies that helped her make sense of her world.

Meghan writes, on average, a song a week. She calls them her "song babies". Sometimes song babies are a daily occurrence but she would say not all them last for very long. Sometimes she sits at her piano every day for a couple of weeks and moves her fingers over the keys and nothing is ready to come out just yet. That's okay, she has learned those song babies will be born, eventually.

Back in 2006 some of those songs were recorded for posterity, swaddled and placed gently into an album titled, "All Things Being Said". A good time was had by all working with Geoff Melkonian, who had produced The Modern Skirts, Five-Eight and the Josh Joplin Group. It was a luscious record with all kinds of crazy instruments and layers and stacked BGV's (that means background vocals to you and me) and off it went into the wide, wide world.

Around the release of "All Things Being Said", Meghan enjoyed quite a few tours with the likes of Edwin McCain and Jay Clifford, headlined her own shows, performed shows in rather large parks in front of so many people they looked like the ocean itself, appeared on the television, tried her hand at this music business thing, was really loving it, actually, and then her life fell apart.

And the songs that were to eventually create her newest album "Songs To Sail By" started to pour out. These were haunting, aching, longing songs about a sailor she dreamed of once. Some of her Band of Brethren* sat her down at the grand piano in the sanctuary of an equally grand Presbyterian church in Atlanta, pressed the record button and, without much planning, without much fanfare, the album emerged. Stripped down, vulnerable and raw, Meghan let go of her grip on those songs and the next album was born.

Now she would like to share them with you.

* Band of Brethren : A band of dudes that she calls friends, namely Noah Alexander and Michael Westbrook but has also, in the past included and sometimes still does include, Billy Somerville, Josh Gott, T.J. Edmond, Jon Meek, Jay Wilson, Mark Cobb, Ryan Robertson, and Deke Spears.

Stained glass windows, things that are broken made new.

City lights, strong coffee, and late nights.

Books you can't put down. Twenty-six symbols rearranged into tangible thoughts.

The loss of a mother.

Becoming a mother.

Mirrors that change while we stay the same.

Hope in heartache. Heartache in love. Love in hard places.

A wild lion.

Music influences: (This will change from time to time but here is what she's been listening to lately)

Ron Sexsmith. The Cure. Electrelane. EmmyLou Harris. Carillon Ringing. Snow Patrol. Patti Griffin. The Damnwells. Joseph Arthur. Wilco. Johnny Cash. Rachmaninov. Neko Case.

Sounds Like: A girl who loved musicals and her piano went treasure hunting and, lo and behold, she stumbled across her parents record collection resplendant with musicals by Sondheim and symphonies by Stravinsky; searching further she found the Beatles and Steely Dan, James Taylor and Billy Joel. And it was good. As the girl grew up she began to write her own lovely rock songs flavoured without pretension but always packed full of honesty and delicious melodies for a daily allotment of listening pleasure.
