This is the first release by a local Los Angeles singer/songwriter called MITCHELL. Yes, he only goes by his first name.
At the ripe age of 27, Mitchell sings of loss and pain, with candid sentimentality. He has a very light, uplifting voice, which steadily emotes with each chord and drum beat.
His music is simple, yet interspersed with complex emotions. It’s not terse or tiring on the ears. “Inside of my Heart,†the title track, lifts the listener to a higher plane, though it’s infused with raw, aching sentimentality. The common theme here is tight, well-orchestrated music and lyrics, from a man unafraid to be emotionally vulnerable and honest.
What’s more, the album’s song titles are actually dotted with hearts in place of dots…and one of the tracks is called “Hello Kitty.†It’s dreamy in a let-me-reminisce-about-my-high-school-crush kind of way. But, alas, no unicorns.
It’s like listening to ELLIOTT SMITH on ecstasy: a young, optimistic, loving and open Smith. It also reminds me of DAMIEN RICE and PAUL DUNCAN.
The guitar work on “Appreciate You†is his best. The progression is solid, the vocals in sync with the beats, and the tone of the song tender. It feels like being in bed with a lover who treats the experience as his first, yet is more experienced than a virgin.
Chicks will certainly dig this CD. I am one of them..
