About Me

Julie Adler is a singer, performance artist, composer, visual artist and writer. She has performed works by such contemporary composers as Somei Satoh, George Crumb, Thea Musgrave, Benjamin Britten, Annea Lockwood, John Harbison and Samuel Barber and worked with the Long Beach Opera, the Don Brenigar Singers and medieval group ORBE: Voices of Spirit. Performance projects premiered at the LA Women's Theatre Festival, Side Street LIVE, Salvation Theatre, Holly Matter and Arcadia Club. A frequent collaborator with Jacki Apple, they premiered 'A Stone's Throw', (Jacki's MYSPACE site) at Hot & Sticky, a performance festival at Highways, and at the 'All-stars of Performance Art.. produced by the Dark Bob (also with John Fleck and Dan Kwong). Julie was a featured artist in ..Beyond Music Sound Festival.. at Beyond Baroque (2002) and at Cal State University Long Beach Art Museum..s Concerts at Noon series in 2003 located in the University Art Museum (in collaboration with composer, David Javelosa).Julie was also co-producer (with Jacki Apple) of EARJAM, an annual LA new music extravaganza and curator/producer of ..Vocal Lounge.., a monthly music/vocal series. In 2004, she produced (and wrote a piece called ..Same as I/Cut Through.. which was also performed at) ..Call & Response.., a sold-out benefit concert at REDCAT featuring the Tibetan monks of Drepung Gomang monastery in South India juxtaposed with the works of 5 contemporary classical composers. She also curated and produced ..Mother Load.., a Cal Arts alumni concert featuring a collaborative work called ..Grilled.. for BBQ grills and voice with fellow alums David Javelosa and Becky Allen.Julie has also worked closely with artist, Andrew Bucksbarg, composer, roger allen ward, director, Leah Mercer, choreographer Heidi Landgraf and flutist, Fawntice McCain and bassonist Sara Schoenbeck; she composed music for About Productions theatre piece, "Properties of Silence", and was included on the Women..s Listening Room Event, at Cal State Fullerton, curated by composer/professor Pamela Madsen and was a featured performer in Dr. Madsen..s original opera ..The Sibyl...Back in NY in the 90s, Julie could be seen in the local folk clubs there and participated in the New York Folk Festival, went to Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas as singer/songwriting finalist, was a featured performer at several CMJ Music Conferences while having had widespread college radio (WFMU, etc.) play across the country. This was of course before Cal Arts, which led her onto different mental terrain.LINKS
