I am Gareth of Deheubarth, Prince Regent of Ystrad Towi. I met Lord Brand Risande's daughter when I was a boy, and though I knew her for one short summer, I never forgot her completely. Her name is known throughout Cymru. Lady Tanon Risande, the Norman who would unite our countries. That union was to take place between her and my brother,Cedric. Hell, I hated him for years over it. Until my uncle offered her to me. I had almost refused. I wanted peace with her people from the first moment I met her. But no matter how much I had wanted to glory in her toothless smiles as a boy—as a man, I wanted nothing to do with her people.
Until I saw her again.
Now, even though she pretends to be someone she is not, I know her. I left a playful, happy girl and returned to a pillar of flawless manners. But there is something deeply provocative about her. It makes her plump lips part with short, scant breaths when I smile at her. She possesses a hunger that smolders beneath that fragile shell of innocence and etiquette. I want to peel that shell away and expose the woman beneath.
I am not unfeeling to how difficult it will be for her to leave her family. I will do my best to help her readjust. It is the time I am going to have to take with her that makes me doubt my control. I want to touch her and watch her come undone. I want to kiss her, taste her breath, take her like a beast in heat. But she is marrying a prince, not an animal. And I will prove it to her if it kills me.
An interview I did with author Paula Quinn (taken from her website)
PQ: Describe your dream woman.
Gareth: I think you know this, Paula. (he grins)
PQ:Behave. Can you elaborate?
Gareth: If you insist. My dream woman is someone who accepts who I am without trying to change me. She has to be trustworthy. (his gaze shifts very subtly to stare straight into me) I have many secrets.
PQ: (I smile, noticing for the first time the striking beauty of his eyes) We'll get into those later.
Gareth: Will we?
PQ: What do you love and hate most about your life?
Gareth: Love and hate are strong words. I enjoy tending to my land, working with my hands and getting things done. I like knowing I am capable of protecting my people, but even more than that I enjoy teaching them to protect themselves. I don't like watching innocent people suffer.
PQ: If you could identify the one single event that made you who you are, what would it be?
Gareth: Finding myself on a battlefield at the age of ten and two had a way of changing my views of the world. I knew two things at a very tender age. One, was that my life would be fraught with danger and choices I might regret making. The other was knowing that I would still make those choices in order to bring peace to Cymru.
PQ: I understand you had seven brothers? What was your childhood like?
Gareth: It was quick. My brothers used to take sport in thrashing me. When we went to live with our Uncle Rhys in Deheubarth, he taught me how to protect myself.
PQ: He taught you how to fight?
Gareth: He taught me how to avoid getting hit.
PQ: What do you fear most?
Gareth: War. Many Cymraeg have been subjugated by the Normans along the marches. Some princes believe the only way to stop the overlords is to go to war with them. But Cymru has been divided by internal fighting, making us weak. We would never be victorious against King William's armies. I believe there is a more reliable way to stop those Marcher lords who bring harm to my people.
PQ: You mentioned secrets earlier. Tell me your darkest secret.
Gareth: Alas, I would, but I would either have to wed you, or kill you. (The sharp curl of his devastating smile tells me he's only half joking.)
PQ: Hmmm, moving right along...What do you regret most in your life?
Gareth: Regrets are really a waste of time, are they not? They accomplish nothing.
PQ: What is your most powerful dream?
Gareth: To have peace in Cymru. Peace in my life. I cannot remember a time when my country has not been at war.
PQ: Reveal the happiest moments in your life.
Gareth: I was ten summers. My uncle had taken me and my brothers to Winchester to meet with King William about a union between my brother, Cedric and Lord Brand Risande's daughter, Tanon. She was lovely. Even at ten, I knew it. We became friends and she filled my days with endless chatter, laughter, and peace. Our time together was short but I have never forgotten it. I have never forgotten her. I have a plan and need your help. Shall I tell you about it, Paula? (I nod) ..It's about Lady Tanon Risande...
