Industrial Blues & Scrapyard Rues

About Me

Grew up in Handsworth, Birmingham. Studied Piano for six years under Tony Hooper, moved to Brighton to Study a degree in Music Production. Refined Guitar and Harmonica playing whilst living in Brighton (still got a lot of refining to do on the harmonica!). Currently working as a freelance producer and session player in and around Brighton. Finally finished the album I've had in the pipeline for a while. It's called 'Release The Bats' and as soon as I get my shit together it'll be available to buy online. But in the meantime enjoy the few tracks I've posted.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: myspace.com/stevenhopkinsmusic
Band Members: Just me, I can be quite antisocial when I want to! However, I can't do everything! I've got Chris Britt on Bass Guitar, as he's got a groove like no other! On Drums I've got the amazingly charismatic Liam Kearley from This Project, he really knows how to make the drums growl and sing! I've also done work with Franco Bidanco on Alto Sax (not many people know he's a mean Sax player!) I've got Jemma Smith providing some much-needed smooth against the rough of my voice with her backing vocals. And finally Charlotte Barber's Clarinet is providing some great character to Coffee & Cigarettes, my ode to Tom Waits!
Influences: Tom Waits (no surprise there!), Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, John Martyn, Cream, Led Zeppelin, John Mayall, Robert Johnson, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Seasick Steve, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Bob Marley, John Hammond Jr, Joanna Newsom, etc... you get the idea! Asside from music, there's literature, film, art... Jack Kerouac, George Orwell, John Keats, John Agard, Jim Jarmusch, David Fincher, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch, Salvador Dali, H R Giger, Utagawa Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai... I guess they all have a bearing on my music in some way or another.
Sounds Like: I cooked up all the above mentioned influences, left them on the hob too long, ate the bulk of it and fell asleep. On awaking, recorded the sound of scraping the burned bits from the bottom of the pan, wrote a few lines to sing over the scraping, and welcome to show business Baby!
