The best idea Sheffield ever had

About Me

COOLING THE TOWERS is our project to turn the disused cooling towers next to Meadowhall, Sheffield into new symbols for the city.

At the moment, the towers are landmarks. But they represent what Sheffield was: grey, dead, post-industrial. We want to reuse them, turn them into a massive work of public art, so they represent what Sheffield IS: creative, green, friendly.

They could be our icon. They could change the way people think about our city. They could be heroes.

THE SUMMER OF CONTENT?

It’s been a while, but now we’re back. Before Christmas it was all guns blazing, racking our brains trying to save the towers, speaking to both listeners on Radio Sheffield, whoring ourselves to the Telegraph, and generally trying to spread the word.

It’s went a bit quiet since then didn’t it? But we haven’t given up. We’ve still been beavering away, regrouping, and now there’s some light at the end of the tunnel. Eon have been a lovely bunch, we’ve all had a brew and a chat, and now they’re warming up to the idea of us doing some kind of temporary installation in the Cooling Towers. We don’t know what yet, it could be just on the inside, it could be around them, it could be anything – that’s up to the artist. But what we do know is this, the demolition has slipped again till at least late summer, and this is our chance to do something really positive.

We’re nearly there. This can happen. We’ve just got one last push. Keep the faith.

Towers R Us.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO:

SIGN THIS PETITION. Someone's already set a petition up. You can see how strongly people feel. Sign it here www.petitiononline.com/tct2/petition.html

TURN EON OFF. If you're a customer, tell them you'll change power suppliers if the towers are knocked down. In fact, just do it now. Why not go a bit greener? Eon produce more CO2 every year than the whole of Croatia. Change toEcotricity

SHOW YOUR FACE. We're going to create a photographic petition. As well as a list of names, we want to actually show the world how many people support these towers and this project. So if you do, take a picture of yourself, or the towers, or of you holding the phrase 'THE TOWERS ARE OURS' and send it to us with your name and location. We'll put it on the website. And tell your friends to do it too. Send it here [email protected]

You can see them from everywhere in Sheffield.

The further away you are, the bigger they get.I can see the towers from my back garden. I live in those terraces at Greystones, near the Somerfields on Eccy Road. I have to climb on top of the picnic ...

Have no fear. The towers are ours.

Yo. Right this is just a first blog to say: have no fear. When we found out they were still going to go ahead with demolition, even after all the arguments we'd put to them, even after all the brillia...
