About Me

Tom White (trombone) - Born in Poole, 1986, Tom started studying the trombone in 1996 aged ten, being introduced to numerous genres of music by his musician parents. After moving to Exmouth in 1999 his studies continued with particular emphasis on classical performance and jazz, joining the 'Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra' in September '96 under the direction of Ken Parr. It is here he was given the opportunity to perform with musicians such as Greg Abate, Bill Watrous, Stan Sulzmann, Bobby Shew, Steve Waterman and Mark Lockheart. Over the next five years he became heavily involved in the southwest jazz scene, playing lead trombone with bands such as, 'AJ's Big Band', 'The Sam Eliot Big Band', and, 'Exeter City Big Band'. During 2001 he toured as lead trombonist with the 'Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra' around Holland, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium, and performed independently in Canada and the U.S.In 2003 he was awarded a scholarship to the 'Guildhall Jazz Summer School' in London, receiving tuition from Jean Toussaint and Michael Garrick, and fronted his own jazz sextet in Exeter to rave reviews, only to dispand in 2004 to commence music studies at Southampton University. Here he joined the 'Southampton University Jazz Orchestra' on lead/solo trombone, and the 'Elastic Band', now a fully professional gigging outfit. Soon gigs became dominant over his university studies, with the joining of the 'Moise Ichama Quartet', 'Big Red', and own solo projects, resulting in him leaving university to focus on jazz performance projects. In 2006 he was awarded runner-up in the 'Jiggs Whigham Young Jazz Trombonist of the Year' competition, leading to tuition in London from Jiggs Whigham, and further offers of work around Southampton, Exeter, Bournemouth and London. Currently based in Southampton, and performing with groups such as the 'Tom White Quintet', 'Free Candy', and the 'Carassco Ensemble', (both lead by drummer Ted Carassco), he is at present working on a small group project encompassing traditional folk influences alongside jazz and classical styles - more to come on this as it develops...
