(((( DJ JoaquÃn Muñoz )))) aka (((( DJ WYZE ONE ))))
Born and raised in the coastal city of Santa Cruz, California on a steady diet of jazz, reggae, rock, soul, latin music, and progressive politics rooted in social justice, my love of music began at an early age when I first learned to hijack my parents hi-fi and drop the needle on the records myself (guess I kind of missed the whole 8 track thing). Growing up I always spent any extra money I had on records, new and used. Most of my selection at the time was either hip hop or roots reggae sprinkled with a bit of dancehall. As I moved on to college at UC Santa Cruz and began travelling the world my eyes and ears opened up to new styles and sounds. My passion for music only grew and I began a stint in college radio that would last for years. I picked up my first set of Technics while holding down several shows at KZSC, culminating in my last and favorite--"Urban Renewal", a weekly journey spanning genres: warming up with rare grooves, moving into hip hop, downtempo, then deeper into various genres of electronic music. The common denominator for me has always been that what I play is soulful with an infectious beat or hook. The same remains true today. After living in LA for five years the exposure to new music increased--almost like an unquenchable thirst. Meanwhile, the crates continued getting deeper and deeper. It was at this time I began hustling my "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" mixtape series up and down California and in New York under the handle "DJ WYZE ONE." At the same time, I worked as a primary analyst and translator for the International Monitor Institute, a non-profit organization focused on gathering video evidence of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda for the UN War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague, Netherlands and Arusha, Tanzania, respectively (both continue today). I then parlayed my experience and studies in linguistics and languages to the high tech industry. I've been working ever since in the field of software internationalization and localization as a Localization Engineer. The last decade of my life has been dedicated to my biggest passions: music and languages. I continue DJing regularly while holding down my day job in the Silicon Valley. I'm currently responsible for all international versions of Palm Inc.'s popular Treo and Centro smartphones while keeping my nights free to make the people move. Connecting the dots from the roots of jazz, soul, reggae, rock, ritmo latino and afro beats into today's finest in HOUSE, HIP HOP, BROKEN BEAT, NEO-SOUL, REGGAE, NUJAZZ, and DOWNTEMPO from all over the globe....
