If there's one unspoken dating rule I've always tried to follow, it's this: never talk endlessly about your ex.
Have you been there, sitting across from a stranger as he/she goes on and on about that recent heartbreak? What a way to kill a first date. That said, bear with me as I tell you about... how I became a single mom at age 28, after my partner and I split up. My daughter, Mae, was seven months old when I became a solo parent. (Her father walked out the door. His whereabouts are unknown, although last I heard he was in Ireland.)
But I got over my heartbreak. When Mae started preschool, I stopped picking up toys -- and started picking up men (well, not really, my life is actually very tame).
Dating as a single mom is quite a delicate matter. First, you've got to find a sitter (I've tried to keep my kid out of it; my friends and I swap childcare.) After letting go of the guilt -- yes, it's okay to go out for a while and have a good time --- it's time to shower, dress, and venture into the chaotic, emotionally-charged world of dating.
This is the bottom line: my daughter is my Number One.
But that doesn't mean I've given up on Mr. Right. Or at least, Mr. Pretty Good.
My first book, Single Mom Seeking: Play Dates, Blind Dates, and Other Dispatches from the Dating World , was published this year (2007).

My Interests

A couple of years into single motherhood, author Rachel Sarah stopped picking up toys -- and started picking up men.

Not really. Her life is actually quite tame.She's still working on how to answer her seven year old daughter's question: "Mommy, what's the Tooth Fairy's real name?"

She writes educational textbooks when she's not writing about dating.

Rachel's book, Single Mom Seeking: Play Dates, Blind Dates, and Other Dispatches from the Dating World , was published this year (Seal Press/Avalon).
