JonBenét Patricia Ramsey (August 6, 1990 – December 25, 1996) was a six-year-old girl and beauty pageant contestant who was found murdered in the basement of her parents' home in Boulder, Colorado, United States, eight hours after being reported missing. The case drew national attention in the United States when no suspect was charged and suspicions turned to possible family involvement. The tantalizing clues of the case have inspired numerous books and articles that attempt to solve the mystery. On August 6th, 1990 at 1:36 am a baby was in such a rush to be born that her mother could barely get to the hospital in time! JonBenet Ramsey was the second child of John Bennett and Patsy Paugh Ramsey. Her unusual name was a combination of her father's first and middle names and a tribute to French names which her mother greatly admired. JonBenet already had four siblings who eagerly awaited the birth of their new little sister, three from her father's first marriage, Jon Andrew, Melinda, and Beth, and her brother Burke. JonBenet was a blessing to her family right from the start. She was bright, beautiful, talented, and a joy to be around. Her mother had been Miss West Virginia in 1977 and was excited about having a daughter that she could pass this pageant legacy on to. During her life JonBenet was Little Miss Colorado, Little Miss Charlevoix, Colorado State All-Star Kids Cover Girl, America’s Royal Miss, National Tiny Miss Beauty, and Little Miss Merry Christmas. Suesan Rajabi, Miss Colorado USA 1996 who judged JonBenet in one of her last pageants, had this to say about her: "JonBenet was sweet and fun-loving. I've seen little girls who seemed to be in pageants against their will, but that wasn't true of JonBenet. She loved to perform, she loved the costumes." Her father recalled that she had absolutely no stage fright. Sometimes JonBenet would even bring Barbie dolls to the pageants to share with the other girls backstage. LaDonna Griego, a Thornton child beauty pageant organizer, said that JonBenet was playful, always everyone's best friend. Another pageant organiser recalled that when JonBenet won she acted as if it was the first time she'd won, and if she lost she'd be the first to congratulate the winner. "She was a rather stunning 6-year-old little girl," said Bill Supernaw who helped her onto a viewing platform during the Charlevoix Venetian Festival several summers ago, where the Ramseys owned a summer home. "I was rather surprised to find out she was only 6." Supernaw said JonBenet was polished and impressive. "It was obvious she had some training or schooling or she had a lot of exposure," he said. "Not a care in the world." JonBenet blossomed in the spotlight just like her mother, the former Miss West Virginia, had done. Patsy once took JonBenet to a reunion of Miss West Virginians and as soon as they got back to Colorado JonBenet said,"When can I do that? I want to do that, too." She liked to play a game she called presenting with her mom. Patsy said that JonBenet picked that up and keyed in on it from the night of the Miss West Virginia pageant, which she would make her mom narrate. She called that "let's play presenting." And Patsy would have to say, "presenting JonBenet Ramsey, JonBenet is wearing a pom-pom on her head and high heels." When JonBenet won a big crown for the National Royal Miss pageant, she took it to school for show and tell day, because she was so proud of it. JonBenet's favorite holidays were Valentine's Day and Christmas. When she wasn't competing in pageants she liked to wear jeans-shorts and comfy t-shirts. She liked to listen to adults talk-at night she would sometimes curl up in a big chair and listen to their conversations. She loved kittens and wearing her hair in pigtails! She also liked to hula hoop, play with her dolls, ice skate, dance, and sing, as well as play with her friends. One of her special talents was standing on her head-she could hold this pose for up to half an hour! She loved school, and her best friend's name was Brittany. She also had a dog, Jacques, whom she adored. JonBenet attended High Peaks Elementary School and was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church. Wherever she went she left loving memories in people’s hearts. The Ramsey's landscaper remembered how intelligent she was-he never talked to her as if she was a little kid. Once JonBenet asked him,"Do roses know their thorns can hurt?" And he replied, "they're a rose's shield. They keep away animals who might eat them." Once during a play the other kids forgot their lines and she filled in for them, because she had memorized everyone else's lines too! She was also considerate to her peers and well liked by other students. Her teacher said that JonBenet was so outgoing she’d never have a problem with an oral book report! She also wrote that "JonBenet is a pleasure to have in class. She is a confident, positive student who works hard on all assignments. JonBenet’s mature behavior makes her a positive role model for the other students." Jonbenet told people that she wanted to be a nurse or a pediatrician someday to help people get well. Once a fellow classmate didn’t bring enough treats for the whole class. JonBenet suggested that they divide the treats in half so that everyone could have some! At four years old JonBenet and the other children were asked what things they thought were important in class. JonBenet said, "One, it's important to be polite, two, to share toys, and three, to be nice to your friends. " A woman whose child was a playmate of JonBenet's said that JonBenet loved to sing and dance, and that she was compassionate. "The other kids at school always wanted her to go with them to the school doctor-kids really liked her. Some kids you always have to keep an eye on, but with JonBenet you could leave them alone to play." In November 1996 JonBenet won the “I caught you being good†Award in her school and was named to the “Star’s Honor Roll.†It was this kind of love and consideration for others that made JonBenet well liked by everyone. Bill McReynolds, who often played Santa at the Ramsey’s Christmas parties, recalled that she was one of the only children who never asked for anything-she only wanted to give (she gave him stardust for his Santa beard!). He said she had an "angel's spirit, which is unusual not only among adults, but also among children." JonBenet was also concerned for her brother Burke-she told Santa Bill to make sure to spend enough time with him. Once JonBenet asked her mother, "how much do you love me, mommy?" And Patsy replied, "JonBenet, I love you and Burke and daddy more than anything in this world." Believe it or not, JonBenet then turned to her and said,"you're not supposed to love anyone more than Jesus!" Her father never dared to smoke or drink around her because she'd immediately wag her finger and say, "Dad, that's not good for you!" JonBenet sometimes went to her father’s office to take him out for lunch with her family. Her parents called her the ball of energy, the "spark plug" in the family. She would make her mother laugh by calling coffee filters "coffee feathers!" Her big brother John Andrew said that she was a tomboy, often scraping her knees while playing. Her aunt once admonished her for running around her Michigan home barefoot and JonBenet answered, "But Auntie, I want to feel the earth under my feet!" Her heart also belonged to her little dog, Jacques. She would lie down on the floor with him and let the dog lick her face, and laugh and laugh. Shirley Brady, a housekeeper for the Ramseys, mentioned that JonBenet rarely cried-she always woke up with a smile. As a baby it was hard to tell if she was up because she wouldn't make any noise, but Shirley would find her in her crib, laughing and cooing. Neighbor Diane Brumfit said that she was a beautiful little girl, but what she most remembered was her personality-she was very engaging and charming. Judith Phillips, a pal of JonBenet's mother who photographed Patsy with her two children for her traveling exhibit "Motherhood" said that JonBenet had a mischievous side. She also described JonBenet as a real watcher, observant and curious. Unfortunately JonBenet was not meant to stay long on this earth. On the night of December 25th-December 26th, 1996, she was strangled to death in her own home by a person whose identity is still a mystery. When JonBenet's parents were asked what helps them through their grief, Patsy responded that JonBenet's present for her Christmas 1996 was a little green paper ornament with the words, "My gift to YOU is ME." Out of all the things the police took as evidence, it was the one thing she most wanted back. John Ramsey remembered that at the Christmas pageant in early December JonBenet won the overall talent award. She took off the medal and put it around her father's neck, as a way of telling him, "Dad, I did really good in my talent." And when Pam, Patsy's sister, went to the house to get some things for the Atlanta funeral, she came up to him and said, "I don't know why, but I had this strange sensation I needed to give you this medal." To him, that was a message delivered by JonBenet to tell him that she was OK, because they were the only ones who knew the significance of that medal. JonBenet, we will never give up to find your killer! You are always in our hearts and prayers. One day there will be justice for you!
