About Me

OBSIDIAN formed in early 2000, when vocalist Turi Mercuri (Influences: Musical Theatre, Pearl Jam, Tool) met guitarist Andrew Postlethwaite (Influences: Soundgarden, System of a Down, Korn, Deftones). After the duo discovered their shared passion for music, they set their minds on finding an experienced drummer and bassist.Though he took his sweet time, Kevin Brezina (Influences: Tool, RHCP, Rage Against the Machine, Velvet Underground) answered the call and together with former drummer Nick Steczkiewicz, the quartet began asserting themselves as Kingston's foremost purveyors of hard, heavy, melodic rock. In 2004, sparks flew with the addition of drummer Ryan Leger (Influences: Primus, 311, Tool, Coheed and Cambria), igniting the fire that has forged OBSIDIAN into the riotous, dynamic and hard-hitting unit it is today. With influences as diverse as the Deftones and Santana, the Velvet Underground and Tool, OBSIDIAN melds modern and progressive rock with metal and hardcore to create a sonic barrage that knocks you to the floor and leaves your body screaming for more. Powerful backbeats and savage riffs overlaid with the blistering velvet intensity of vocalist Turi Mercuri's profound lyrics create OBSIDIAN's signature sound. From the band's humble beginnings at Kingston's Clark Hall Pub, OBSIDIAN established a devoted f an-base, which grew steadily with appearances at AJ's Hangar, Alfie's Pub and Clark Hall Pub. Over the next two years, OBSIDIAN composed a groundbreaking collection of origial material, culminating in the release of their first full-length album on April 10, 2003 at the Elixir Nightclub. In late January 2003, the band opened for Sextant/EMI recording artists Robin Black and the Intergalactic Rockstars, and in early February rocked AJ’s Hangar with Sony Records artists Edwin & the Pressure. Finishing up an exhausting string of gigs, OBSIDIAN brought on a sweaty sonic takedown at Kingston's CMW Band Slam, impressing crowd and judges alike. March saw them share the stage with New York-based Jive Records artists Three Days Grace. The slew of extremely successful shows continued in 2003, with OBSIDIAN rocking 4000+ fans at Richardson Stadium, taking part in the MTV Campus Invasion Tour alongside Gob, Jersey, and Kazzer, making an appearance at the Steam Whistle Indie Club in the Edge 102.1 studio and sharing the stage with Canadian Rock Gods Bionic and Bieler recording artists Slaves On Dope. A force to be reckoned with in the local scene, the band is making its way across the province, bringing passion back to a pop-weary, rock-starved public. In September of 2004 OBSIDIAN needed some change and subsequently moved to Toronto. A month later OBSIDIAN's Gen-Sub Records Indie Week performance had everyone talking. Three shows later OBSIDIAN's Friday night "360" show saw over 300 people come out to see what all the fuss is about. Having just recently sealed a deal with legendary canadian producer Matt DeMatteo (Big Wreck, Danko Jones, Ashley MacIsaac, Edwin, etc),Obsidian is heading into studio to record their upcoming EP to be released early spring!!
