Delzie

Delzie’s story begins in the summer of 1984. It is the day of the Notting Hill carnival, but instead of joining in with the festivities one expectant young lady finds herself drifting off to sleep in a hospital bed somewhere in North London. She is about to go into surgery. She wakes up the following day feeling groggy and very sore, and spares a passing thought for all the people who will most certainly be indulging themselves in the music and the vibrant atmosphere up in Notting Hill for the second day of the Carnival. But she doesn’t mind the pain and is unfazed by her surroundings, because asleep next to her is her fresh faced brand new baby boy. Fast forward to the mid nineties and the baby boy, who is now aged 13 and known to most people as Del, casually walks through a hallway in the infamous north London comprehensive known as Holloway Boys School. It is lesson changeover and as he glides nonchalantly through the English corridor he has one destination in mind, though on route to his next lesson he becomes distracted by the sound of noise and laughter coming from one of the rooms, so he decides to stop off for a moment and blend in with chaos. Here he meets a few friends who made the same decision to stop off whilst on the way to there respective classes. Moments after entering the room, young Del found himself listening intently to one of the older boys he knew, reciting a sequence of lyrics with a fascinating quick fire method of delivery; he later found out that these were the lyrics of a well known Jungle MC known as skibadee. Delzie was instantly amazed by what he heard and spent the rest of the day excited about creating a verse of his own, and sure enough, when he reached home that afternoon he put pen to paper and began his first attempt. Fast forward a little more to the present and we see the result of Delzie’s evolution from being a colourful and imaginative back of the classroom spitter, into the adventurous and thought provoking artist he is today. Delzie has a style of writing that subtly presents itself in his artistry by way of the eclectic selection of instrumentals he has worked with over the years to complete his aptly titled debut “talking to the music”. He describes his style as being “fluid” because of the way it can adapt and shape itself based on whatever genre of music it is accommodating. He achieves this fluidity by attempting to make the words and the music sound as if they are responding to each other, hence the title “talking to the music”. The adventurous nature that Delzie is known to have means that his work is considered to be very versatile and undefined; in addition to his adventurousness, Delzie also lives up to the character traits of his star sign, and being a Virgo this means that by nature he is always on a relentless pursuit for perfection, which in turn means that one common feature in all of his music is an assurance of quality. He maintains that when he writes, every word is written for a reason and he tries to make sure that nothing is there by accident. Delzie’s only aspiration is to be successful in whatever he does. Led by childhood dreams of being a successful artist, Delzie has striven to surpass himself and transcend the level of his own abilities at every opportunity. His work ethic is highlighted by the fact that at age 20 he had already completed a degree in law and later went on to graduate with honours. Not bad for someone who was considered lucky to have made it through secondary school? Since graduating there has been a whole hearted commitment from Delzie towards his music; he says that being an artist is the only thing he could ever see himself doing, and an artist in every sense of the word is exactly what he is. His fluidity of style and cleverly devised lyrics are what set this amazing new talent apart from the rest. Delzie and his debut album “talking to the music” are definitely two things to look out for in the coming year, so keep your ears open and your eyes peeled because Delzie is definitely someone that music fans will be talking about.
