About Me

Every wave, every rhythm, only ridden once.

Riding sound, riding surf, every moment totally spontaneous.

Nothing written, nothing rehearsed.

"Life Like Liquid" is an exploration into the creative realms of surfing, sound and fluidity. This is what happened when a group of musically inclined surfers came together with no other intention than to ride sound waves, ocean waves and record the thrill of the ride.

The plan was to have no plan at all. To allow intuition, chance and circumstance be our compass within every moment. The improvisational aspect shared by these two art forms is the escence of the Life Like Liquid experience.

Here's a preview.

The soundtrack for this film is what really sets it apart from other surf movies. It was played and recorded in a beach house that was converted into a makeshift studio right on the dunes with views over the best waves in the region. The crew that were present just jammed, surfed, ate and slept every day for a two wk period. Heaven.

We put the word out amongst the whole network of wave riders and sound creators that weve met over the years. Some of the crew who came included Ash Grunwald, Terepai Richmond (d.i.g., the Whitlams), Tony Hughes (King Tide), James Cox (Groove Dally), Jim Banks, Chris Lane & Stu Fergie (Oka) Colin "Fingers Malone" O'Rielly (The Winnie Coopers), Lawrence Eastland (Sound Foundation),Shannon Sol Carroll and OJ Newcomb (Afro Dizzi Act, Band of Frequencies). Some were there for the whole time, others just popped in for a couple of days. Everything we played was totally improvised. No rehearsals, no planning, no one conducting proceedings in any way. It was just a matter of press record and go.

Low Pressure Productions organised the recording, mixing, mastering and production of the soundtrack. We were blessed with the presence and skills of sound engineer Justin Tressider, who documented every note, rhythm and sound that happened inside the house. OJ Newcomb and Sol Carroll (LPP) then spent a few months sifting through the 50 hours of music that was recorded till the most inspired and fluid jams were found. Each track was then tweaked, mixed and mastered to bring out the best in the performances and the vibe in the room at the time. Some of the best tracks are on a double cd to be reased with the film. News: We just returned from Japan where we played with Low Pressure Sound System and Ash Grunwald on the Surf and Sound tour to launch the "Life Like Liquid" film and soundtrack. The crew at Surf Rock International set up a great tour of surfing and sounds through coastal towns Fukushima, Ciba and Shonan, then on to Tokyo.
After the tour we headed down to Osaka, then on to Taiji to be a part of a surfers circle ceremony at the Dolphin and Whale "killing Bays" to draw attention to the annual slaughter that happens there. Each year they kill thousands of these beautiful, intelligent and social creatures for their meat (which is contaminated with Mercury and highly toxic) and for capture for sale to marine parks.
