Chris Santiago is a Chicago native who first fell in love with music under the guidance of his parents, who both pushed him towards it. After a while, their enthusiasm caught on, and Santiago joined bands in high school and played himself. Shortly thereafter, he began recording local bands from his high school in his basement, an early indicator of his interest in producing. After attending raves and observing the power one person – a DJ - could have over entire crowds of people, he caught the DJ bug himself. Those early experiences would shape the future of Santiago’s career.
“I love to play music that gets people moving regardless of what kind of electronic music they are into,” says Santiago. “I have always been a fan of incorporating different styles of house into my set - you have to keep things interesting to the listener.” Santiago began working his way up the Chicago's nightlife hierarchy in 2000. Within one year of DJ-ing live gigs, he secured a Friday night residency at Zentra Nightclub's House Arrest and held the residency for seven years. In September 2008, Santiago announced an exclusive year-long residency with Chicago’s Smart Bar. “For me, the main reason why I produce is to get to DJ!” says Santiago. “To me, DJ-ing is my first love and production is second.”
For a second love, Santiago sure keeps busy. In addition to his work as a DJ, Santiago is a talented producer. Since teaming up with Tim Bushido in 2001, he has released numerous EP’s and remixes under the moniker Santiago and Bushido on some of the most well respected labels around including Potty Mouth, Om, and Ultra. Original work includes over a dozen albums and EPs. In addition to belting out club tracks earning them critical moxie in Chicago and beyond, Santiago and Bushido were involved with Chicago native Colette's 2007 artist album Push for Om Records.
2008 brought great success. The two longtime friends were Beatport’s most downloaded artist in January 2008 for “Headtrick”, and have had a stellar year of spreading their unique blend of tech-tinged house beats and killer remixes across the globe, including tours in the U.K. and Australia. The duo's For What EP on Potty Mouth Music was released to critical praise and support from DJs across the globe including Switch, Jesse Rose, and Johnny Fiasco. They have also released Blowin Up My Phone (with Jake Childs) on Inuedndo and Cops and Robbers EP (as Cops and Robbers) on Potty Mouth this year. The latest Santiago & Bushido EP, Santiago & Bushido vs. DJ Fame For The People, was released on Potty Mouth this fall.
2009 is sure to continue Santiago’s success. Smart Bar is pleased to announce a new exclusive residency with Santiago, beginning September 2008 and continuing for one year. Santiago will play on alternating months, joining the ranks of Smart Bar residents Kaskade, Colette, DJ Heather, Miles Maeda and Justin Long. In addition to his Smart Bar residency, Santiago has several forthcoming releases, including work with Larry Tee (Louie Vuitton S&B Rmx), Johnny Fiasco (Conduction S&B Rmx), Colette (Runnin Around S&B Rmx) and Santiago & Bushido (Dotbleep EP).
