Jonathan behaves strangely at first, the influence of the faceless child taking its toll on him, but soon grows comfortable with the presence of his nightly visitor – even agreeing to help him cross over into the plain of the living in order to help him seek peace. Neither Jonathan, nor the spirit-child that is named Conner, is aware that a force of pure evil anxiously awaits the opening of the doorway between the worlds of the living and the dead. Under Conner’s influence, Jonathan leaves the house late one evening and flees into the darkness of the nearby woods, bound for a rotting tobacco barn. Neal Fowler immediately rushes after him. When Jonathan is stopped before reaching his destination, he begs Neal not to put him on the "swing". Neal notices that an old rope swing with a wooden seat swings in the wind from the branches of an oak tree behind the barn, but Jonathan’s fear of it remains a mystery. Soon, Neal and Tiffany introduce Jonathan to child therapist Melissa Grayson, who becomes fast friends with all of them. Melissa knows that something unusual lurks beneath the surface of the little boy’s claims, but cannot put her finger on it. Eventually, the boy ceases to talk about his nightly visitor and his parents assume that he has gotten rid of his unseen friend, not knowing that Jonathan was still very much in contact with Conner. On the night of All Saint’s Eve, Jonathan is suddenly and violently consumed by an evil presence while at his grammar school Halloween carnival, which causes him to brutally attack a teacher. Before his parents can stop him, he escapes into the night. They immediately set out to find him, knowing that whatever has taken control of the boy is certainly not another child. A ten year old girl named Wendy Crenshaw, one of Jonathans schoolmates who witnesses the attack, is overcome seconds later by Conner’s spirit. Conner had been attempting to cross over from the world of the dead to be with Jonathan, unknowingly being pursued by the stronger spirit of his foster-father, Darius Weatherford. Much more powerful than Conner, Weatherford has taken control of Jonathan and is now using him as an instrument of revenge. Conner, having to incorporate a physical form to interact with Weatherford, has no choice but to take Wendys form instead. Eventually, Jonathan’s parents and Melissa cross paths with Wendy, realizing that Conner is within her. Together, they decide that they have to stop Weatherford before he can cause any more harm. Conner reluctantly tells them that the only way to destroy Weatherfords spirit is to incapacitate and destroy the host body by flame, which means killing their own son. Weatherford has retribution in mind - vengance against everyone in the small town of Sumter, South Carolina – against those who sent him to his death for the brutal murders of eight children nearly a hundred years ago. As Neal, Tiffany, Melissa, and Conner search the streets, Weatherford makes his murderous way through the town of Sumter in Jonathan’s small, yet now incredibly powerful body. Leaving a trail of death and destruction in his wake, he is un-stoppable and bound for a familiar destination: the desolate field and rotting barn that Jonathan had attempted to reach months ago. Darius Weatherford’s home …where Conners bones still lay hidden. The climactic confrontation between the group and Jonathan takes place against the backdrop of Weatherfords’s barn. Neal discovers Conners remains. When Jonathan suprises him, Tiffany and Melissa come to his aid. Tiffany is gunshot by her own son, leaving Neal and Melissa to deal with the possessed boy in a mental and physical battle – a battle for the life of a child as well as their own. ..

About the author:“South Carolina’s new VOICE of horror.”42 year old Robert Howell is a native of South Carolina, growing up in the small community of Timmonsville which lies just outside of Florence. He attended Roy Hudgens Academy in Lynchburg (alongside another well-known Carolina writer – western novelist Johnny Boggs) and Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Developing an interest in horror films and fiction at a very early age, Howell began to write short stories on a regular basis while still in grammar school, often illustrating them as well. As a teen, he was an avid reader of such authors as Dean Koontz, John Saul, and of course, Stephen KingWhile living in the Myrtle Beach area, Howell practiced his graphics arts, creating advertisements and humorous characters for local newspapers, magazines, screen printing, and more. With some success selling freelance cartoon panels to various magazines, he put his writing on a back burner for a few years. After his return to Florence, Howell wrote and illustrated an original comic strip entitled “The Single File” which ran locally in an entertainment weekly known as Five O’Clock Friday for over four years. The entire collection was published in book form in 2001. He contributed his artwork to childrens books and also created the characture of WBTW TV-13 news personality Cecil Chandler. Still used on the “Cecil’s World” program today, Howell’s art is seen by thousands of viewers each week.Sitting back down in front of his computer in the late nineties, Howell returned to his love of horror fiction. Before long, the dark tales he had been carrying in his mind began to take shape. He started work on a collection of horror tales set in his home state. Howell creates a much darker South Carolina than the one we all know – one that is not all that pleasant after the sun goes down. During this process, one particular story – that of a five-year old boy being contacted by the spirits of a murdered child and his killer - became the framework of VOICES CARRY.Robert Howell now lives in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
