Illustrator and designer Machiyo Kodaira (Machi) was born and grew up in Tokyo, Japan. After studying the basics of design and fine art at Joshibi University and KIDI Parsons, she moved to New York City in 1999 to focus on studying illustration. Machiyo graduated Parsons School of Design with BFA Illustration in 2002.
Specialized in book and editorial illustrations, she works for clients in New York and Tokyo as a freelance illustrator. Her narrative and sophisticated works done by ink, watercolor or acrylics are highly appreciated in both the U.S. and Japan.
Her first children's book "Hachiko Waits" by Lesléa Newman is now available from Henry Holt and Co., New York. Also, "Don't know much about Martin Luther King Jr." by Kenneth C. Davis just came out in Feb 2006. Currently she is working on illustrations for "Bottom of the Ninth" by Jaime Adoff.

Also she is an art director, designer and co-owner of Brooklyn based fashion label COSKEL UNIVERSITY . Now COSKEL UNIVERSITY is known for a brand that creates "Wearable Art" and gains popularity in the U.S., the Caribbeans and Japan (soon to be in Europe).
