The Blue Fair Godmother left, amused and patronizing. When he was gone, Lazzaro promised Billy and poor old Edgar Derby that he was going to have revenge, and that revenge was sweet.
"It's the sweetest thing there is," said Lazzaro. "People fuck with me," he said, "and Jesus Christ are they ever fucking sorry. I laugh like hell. I don't care if it's a guy or a dame. If the President of the United States fucked around with me, I'd fix him good. You should have seen what I did to a dog one time."
"A dog?" said Billy.
"Son of a bitch bit me. So I got me some steak, and I got me the spring out of a clock. I cut that spring up in little pieces. I put points on the ends of the pieces. They were sharp as razor blades. I stuck 'em into the steak--way inside. And I went past where they had the dog tied up. He wanted to bite me again. I said to him, 'Come on, doggie--let's be friends. Let's not be enemies any more. I'm not mad.' He believed me."
"He did?"
"I threw him the steak. He swallowed it down in one big gulp. I waited around for ten minutes." Now Lazzaro's eyes twinkled. "Blood started coming out of his mouth. He started crying, and he rolled on the ground, as though the knives were on the outside of him instead of the inside of him. Then he tried to bite out his own insides. I laughed, and I said to him, 'You got the right idea now. Tear your own guts out, boy. That's me in there with all those knives.'" So it goes.
"Anybody ever asks you what the sweetest thing in life is--" said Lazzaro, "it's revenge."
There were two peepholes inside the airlock--with yellow eyes pressed to them. There was a speaker on the wall. The Tralfmadorians had no voice boxes. They communicated telepathically. They were able to talk to Billy by means of a computer and a sort of electric organ which made every Earthling speech sound.
"Welcome aboard, Mr. Pilgrim," said the loudspeaker. "Any questions?"
Billy licked his lips, thought a while, inquired at last: "Why me?"
"That is a very Earthling question to ask, Mr. Pilgrim. Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything? Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen bugs trapped in amber?"
"Yes." Billy, in fact, had a paperweight in his office which was a blob of polished amber with three ladybugs embedded in it.
"Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why."
"Where am I?" said Billy Pilgrim.
"Trapped in another blob of amber, Mr. Pilgrim. We are where we have to be just now-three hundred million miles from Earth, bound for a time warp which will get us to Tralfmadore in hours rather than centuries."
"How--how did I get here?"
"It would take another Earthling to explain it to you. Earthlings are the great explainers, explaining why this event is structures as it is, telling how other events may be achieved or avoided. I am a Tralfmadorian, seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the Rocky Mountains. All time is all time. It does not change. It does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. It simply is. Take it moment by moment, and you will find that we are all, as I've said before, bugs in amber."
"You sound to me as though you don't believe in free will," said Billy Pilgrim.

"If I hadn't spent so much time studying Earthlings," said the Tralfmadorian, "I wouldn't have any idea what was meant by 'free will.' I've visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and I have studied reports on one hundred more. Only on Earth is there and talk of free will."
"Would--would you mind telling me--" he said to the guide, much deflated, "what was so stupid about that?"
"We know how the Universe ends--" said the guide, "and Earth has nothing to do with it, except that it gets wiped out, too."
"How--how does the Universe end?" said Billy.
"We blow it up, experimenting with new fuels for our flying saucers. A Tralfmadorian test pilot presses a starter button, and the whole Universe disappears." So it goes.

"If you know this," said Billy, "isn't there some way you can prevent it? Can't you keep the pilot from pressing the button?"
"He has always pressed it, and he always will. We always let him and we always will let him. The moment is structured that way."
Well now, to take up more space with boring shit about myself. I'm not a unique individual; I am a fatalist; I have no faith left in the human race; I've been a loner for the better part of my life and have grown to accept and embrace that aspect of myself whilst maintaining an extremely esoteric circle of friends (more like a triangle, really, but who's counting); I'm told that I'm quite intelligent, even though I wouldn't come out and admit it myself; I've been the type of person that people would gossip about and say that "oh he'll shoot up his school one day lol;" I prefer solitude and I dislike loneliness; I'm trying to act more my age, yet every time I do, I feel like I'm losing face and throwing away everything in which I believe; I act like an old man a lot but I do enjoy going out and having long conversations with meaningful people about whatever strikes our fancy, casually drinking, casually clubbing, casually lounging, and many of the other activities that people my age do; I do believe in God and embrace everything for which he stands, I just don't believe in most of the people who preach His word; I am paradoxically self-destructive and self-preserving; I am extremely sensitive and creative, even though I hate to admit it because a part of me sees those aspects of myself as weakness; I am a very proud person, proud of my race, my heritage, my bloodline, my way of life, but I am in no way an extremist nor do I wish to even discuss my pride with 99.8% of the world's population; I can't quite say I love myself right now, but I'm sure as shit trying to; In real life, I'm extremely sarcastic, so sarcastic that most times people can't tell if I'm joking or not, unless they've known me for more than 3 or 4 years of my life, and I don't plan on changing; regardless of where I'm living, I'm from the East Coast, which means that I am an East Coaster, 'nuff said; I've traveled a bit and I can certainly say that I'm a changed man from where I've been, and that my eyes are opened to the world around me; I choose to dwell both in darkness and in light, to see through both the eyes of hate and the eyes of love, to feel the highest peaks of happiness and the deepest pits of depression; I am fortunate enough to have nothing which binds me to my current life and living situation, that I could at any moment give up everything I have and completely disappear from the face of the earth, to live the rest of my life in nameless obscurity; through everything, I am just a simple man trying to make it in this fucked-up world, and if you can't deal with that and the way I see life, then you shouldn't bother with me because I refuse to change for myself, let alone for someone else; I seem to be the kind of guy that can have a girl as a friend, give her good advice, good laughs, good times, good food, but girls don't want to date me because I'm seen too much as a friend or as too "intimidating," which is just how I am, incidentally; I choose to let people walk over me because I am strong enough with myself to support anything that someone can throw at me: I've come to a place in my life where I understand that some people are miserable and they choose to try to make others miserable so they can in turn feel better about themselves, however once one realizes this self-evident truth about misery, one can learn how to take the problems and insecurities of others upon one's back, shoulders strong and legs firm in the ground like the mighty Atlas, never ceasing to hold up both oneself and others at the cost of nothing to oneself; I choose the path of a warrior because inherently, I am one, and before I could ever make the choice of which life-path I wanted to follow, the choice was made for me: I believe that there is no greater sacrifice that I can make than my own self for those whom I love; If I had to survive, I could make it in any country in which German, Spanish and/or Irish are spoken without communicating at all in English; I also can swear in Russian, German, Spanish, Irish, Hebrew, Italian, English, Norwegian, Japanese, and Taiwanese Mandarin. All in all, I'm just like everyone else out there, but better.
