About Me
The story of Butcher Shop Quartet is one for the storybooks. The true beginnings of the band go back to the mid-1980's, when Skertchal and Brewdic got into some now archived 7-inches from a publishing company that will not be here after mentioned. After a decade of experimenting with various mediums of sound, the ideals of mind producer Cyrus entered the Butcher Shop arena. From there every aspect of espionage and guerilla tactics was introduced into the craft. Around the late 90s the band took this knowledge given by Cyrus and his brothers and we were on our way to truly understanding some serious American archetypes. One night it all dawned upon us. Our knowledge of symbols, and our knowledge of subversives, and our deep knowledge of each other, produced a substance so intrinsically sickening that it was released within several hours of recording. Nearly four years has passed since that cathartic extradition and with many hours spent in arranging, mixing, and mastering, the product is our first out print of classics: Hynotoader, Quite a Knife, Fudge Drinks (The Song), Death of Demon, and P is a real F.The legacy of this project has entered a new age. From 2006 to 2007 Skertchal and Brewdic went to the haven of Kilarney Farms, a musical refuge seeped in Florida swamp lore. Kilarney Farms provided three key canons for the boys in Butchershop. The first, space and separation from "hectic" vibrations allow for a true tone. Most music is based off the "hectic" tones we all hear and sense in our daily life. Most music finds harmony within these daily tonelines. Kilarney Farms severs the idea of a wall to bounce tones off of and back to the ear and looks to find the essence of the ear and thus the essence of harmony. While most Western music in the 12-tone scale can be represented mathematically, our friends and colleagues in mathematical fields are unable to represent the relationship of our tones in a real and numerical fashion. We are very proud of this accomplishment. The second is to always use "dead" instruments. The simplest way to describe this notion is to compare the sleeping mind and the awake mind. The awake mind has a direction, an identity, a mapped thought process. While the sleeping mind is void of these, and character is nil, and is open to any influence.
A "dead" instrument has the same qualities as a sleeping mind. And thus when one combines a "dead" instrument along with the philosophy of the first canon one will begin to find those true tones and harmonies. The third, last, and most important canon of Kilarney Farms is the art of mind producing. The art of mind producing was instilled by mind producer Cyrus long before Butchershop was aware of Kilarney Farms. Unbeknown to Skertcahl or Brewdic, Cyrus had picked up some of the philosophies of Kilarney but never fully developed or understood some of the principles of the refuge. He had walked away from the Kilarney Farm refuge without a full understanding of mind producing. Cyrus left the refuge abruptly in the late 80's and shortly afterwards was when Skertchal and Brewdic met up with Cyrus and began learning the techniques of a mind producer. The reason why this pursuit of mind producing is so important is that without these techniques the first two canons would be obsolete. You cannot use a "dead" instrument without the proper set of mind, just as you cannot sever the "hectic" without the proper set of mind.
So needless to say BSQ is ushering a new dawn for themselves as a band and hopefully a new dawn for a dying art. If you are looking for more info on this lost art please write us. It is a simple art, but hard to explain in few words. The new recordings based of these principles is set to be released in Fall 2007.
