About Me

Pioneering Oxford-based independent label, Shifty Disco, will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on 27th January, 2007. To commemorate the occasion, Shifty Disco will be releasing a triple CD compilation album, shiftydisco10, on January 22nd, 2007. Four of the acts from the label, including My Device, winners of NME.com’s Breaking Bands competition, will be playing a celebratory gig at The Luminaire, Kilburn on Friday 26th January, followed by several dates around the country. Radio 1 will be kicking things off with a Live Session at Maida Vale with The Race and Paperlung on Wednesday, 24th January.
Shifty Disco was launched initially as the Shifty Disco CD Singles Club, with the label releasing 2-track CD singles monthly to 500 willing subscribers who signed up, in trust, in advance. The CD Singles Club ran for 6 and a half years until the label switched it over to a Weekly Download Singles Club in the middle of 2003. Its 5th birthday in January 2002 was marked by a Birthday bash at Maida Vale which was broadcast live by John Peel.
Heralded for being one of the few labels who made records on individual merit, Shifty Disco in its early years, released albums from every corner of the globe, including those by Dustball, AM60, Nought, Beulah, Elf Power, Jack Drag, and Unbelievable Truth. Shifty Disco then came across a burgeoning talent in its own backyard. Oxford’s The Young Knives were thrown into the studio and both the 7-track "...Are Dead" mini-album and the 4-track "Rollerskater" EP came out the other side.
Since 2003 the label has used the Download Singles Club as its source of discovery of all things shiny and new; the results being various singles and albums from The Unisex (Stockholm), currently touring Europe with their first album, The Race (Reading) whose debut album “Be Your Alibi” received great reviews when released earlier this year, Meister (Tokyo), Domes Of Silence (Oxford), Seagull Strange (Bristol) whose debut album is out next year, Paperlung (London) fronted by ex-Boo Radley Sice and My Device (Brighton).
