music, writing, socio-political issues, art, the environment (or would that go under the socio-political issues). This will probably get fleshed out later. Right now, this is what I came up with.
Friends, fellow travelers, maybe more. I really don't know at the moment. Right now, I'm just trying to take things as they come (not as easy a task as it seems). You know what I mean by this.
Do we really wanna get into this topic? Do you think you can handle this? If you think you can here goes.Musical tastes are pretty much all over the road. Artists I'm into at the moment include (in no particular order): Jello Biafra (both DKs and various collaborations), Bratmobile, Fugazi, P-Funk, Frank Zappa, Motorhead, Chumbawamba, MC5, Weird Al Yankovic, D.O.A., Michael Franti and Spearhead, John Lee Hooker, MDC, Ani DiFranco, Ramones, X, Little Steven, Paul Weller, Citizen Fish, Subhumans (UK), Nazareth, Led Zeppelin, Napalm Death, Candye Kane, The BellRays, Steve Forbert, Runaways, Koko Taylor, Sleater-Kinney, Bangs, Kris Kristofferson, Kinky Friedman, Neurosis, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Mahjongg, Bunnygrunt, Beat Happening, Leah Quinnelle All Stars Featuring Happy, Cheap Trick, The Donnas, Judas Priest, Partyline (DC), Tiny Pants, Big Star, Big Medicine, Blackfire, Thin Lizzy, etc....That's the short list. Been to more shows than I can count and trying to figure out favorite artists sometimes leaves me at a loss. I'll wait until some people's heads stop spinning before going on with this topic.
A few recommendations (in no particular order but worth it): This Revolution (hell yeahs to the True/False Film Festival for the screening. Finally out on DVD), We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen, Me and You and Everyone We Know (see this! I won't say more and spoil it for you), Mary Jane's Not A Virgin Anymore (Sarah Jacobson RIP), The Spirit of 76, Dazed and Confused, Heathers, The Yes Men, Fahrenheit 911, URGH! A Music War, Death To Smoochy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Theremin, American Graffiti, Josie and the Pussycats (far from perfect but makes a few interesting points), Fantasia, Metropolis (the Fritz Lang classic , though the anime with the same title is interesting too), Strange Brew, The Blues Brothers, Animal House, Hollywood Knights, Baby Snakes, UHF, Valley Girl, Say Anything, Star Wars (saw the first one again a couple Memorial Day weekends ago), Sweet Sweetback's Baadddaaasss Song (though I have to be in the right mood for this one), Medium Cool (need to see that one again), M*A*S*H* (Why wasn't Duke in the TV show? Also, how come the movie Frank Burns was a zealot but the TV version was a wuss in comparison? Surprised I forgot that one), The Shield Around The K, A Scanner Darkly (intense film), Brick, Boratinstructional/industrial hygiene films from the 50s through 80s (remember when they used to show some of these on Night Flight kids?), probably a lot more to come....
A few faves at this time (as you probably have guessed - not necessarily in any order): SCTV (need to get those DVDs when I get the funds), Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law, 70s era Saturday Night Live, The Family Guy, Austin City Limits, Henry's Film Corner (now The Henry Rollins Show), The Daily Show, Colbert Report, My Name Is Earl, Da Ali G Show (some friends rented the DVDs recently and we all got hooked on it), The Boondocks, M*A*S*H* (I'm surprised I didn't think of that one sooner), The Venture Brothers, Moral Orel (it's so wrong you can't stop watching it), Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil (it's about time they started airing new episodes - a classic) and more to come.....
The Chomsky Trilogy by Noam Chomsky, A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn, When Will Jesus Bring The Pork Chops by George Carlin, America: The Book by Jon Stewart,Gruesome Acts of Capitalism by David Lester. More the come. Okay, I probably should read more, I admit it, but there will be more to come.
