THE SYMBOLIC LIFE: a symbolic life means to be attentive to the signifigance of the stuff of life, sensitive to the meaningful activities that engages us and the things that surrounds us. Images and things that carry meaning gives shape and importance and dignity to the passage of our days. we live our symbols long before we reflect on them and understand how they work. symbols always carry unconsious contents. symbols are very complex for a reason that is very simple. symbols are there before we know they are there. symbols do their thing on us before we know just what is being done. as we grow towards adult consciousness we relate to symbols in different ways. there is confusion between inner meaning and outer fact, between our names for things and the things themselves. there is confusion between the symbol and the reality upon which it touches. i have a beautiful little picture that a friend made for me and gave to me after we had shared a signifigant time together. a picture is a picture and a friendship is a friendship and we all know what pictures and friendships are. its only a symbol. one must be attentive to the delicate balance between inner meaning and outter reality. a symbol is a full container and not an empty shell, but the deeper reality which the symbol reveals is confused with the reality of the container itself. both are right and both are wrong. the sun and the moon, flags and wedding rings, water and bread and wine all have profound divine and human meanings. and yet they all remain just what they are. it is in its own reality in its being just what it is, that the symbol opens the door to the deeper reality. faith is needed if symbols are to be reconized for what they are. loss of the symbolic sense therfore involves a loss of faith. to live a symbolic life is simply to bring faith to the stuff of life and so befriend our symbols. if we rarely reflect on our experiences and if we do not know our own stories there will be few symbols to befriend. living the rythum that makes life human is the cycle of experience, that cycle is the symbolic life. if it is lived one will be surrounded with signifigance. if it is not lived one has lost substantial touch with the kind of signifigance that raises life beyond the level of interesting configurations of ink.
