Biography
Lauren D
Jazz alto-saxophonist, author-singer- and composer. It all started in the spring 1970 in Paris.
A little girl from Cuban background was born and she made her entire family happy.
Her grand- mother named her ‘Laurence’ not only by chance since it is from the Latin word ‘Laurus’(bay leaves) symbol of victory in the Antiquity. Her mother is a soul music lover and she fans Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Sun Ra, Jimmy Hendrix, Al Green , Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. Thus, in her very early childhood she is awakened to the Afro-American world.A crucial encounter in her life is the one with Vi Avelino
whom becomes a real mentor to her. He introduces her to John Coltrane’s music.
She is only 16. So overwhelmed with what she just heard, she decides to dedicate herself to alto saxophone. In 1988 she enters Bagneux’s conservatoire for 7 years. During the first years she’s got Jean-Louis Chautemps as a teacher. He will introduce her to the Free Jazz. Then for the last years Eric Barret teaches her Modal Jazz. Nevertheless she never stopped seeing less academic musicians who will show her how to perform with guts, since she discovered Charlie Parker.
After the conservatoire years, which remain a nice thought, she decides to register to CIM for a year (one of the largest European schools of Jazz) where she takes courses with great enthusiasm, particularly one taught by Philippe Baudouin (Historian). One evening a classmate invites her to the ‘New Morning’ to hear Archie Sheep.
After the CIM, she wishes to learn farther and takes the entrance exam for the American School of Modern Music in Paris. One of her classmates informs her that the Jazz festival ‘Banlieues Bleues’ is looking for saxophonists to play in David Murray’s big band.
A great partnership is born, and during concerts he puts her on the front of the stage as she plays her timid improvisations. In 1996, David Murray introduces her to Robert Irving III, they embark together on a tour to Dakar (Senegal), warmly receives them for a series of concerts. Upon returning to Paris, Roberts Irving III asks her to come and play in his band in Chicago (U.S.A.)…
In 1997, she registers to Schola Cantorum (which used to be Erik Satie’s school) to take orchestral classes.
Her first single ‘Vécu’ (Soul-Jazz) is auto produced and released in 1999 at the ‘Fnac’ ( a music store in Paris such as the Virgin Megastore).
During the year 2000, she performs at the ‘New Morning’ with Archie Sheep. She records ‘Story Of’, another single, more modern Jazz.
She goes to Cuba on August 2000 to perfect herself and registers to Havana National School. She is there for a Chucho Valdès master-class and for a Herbie Hancock’s one a few days later. She quickly meets with Kenny Barron, and during a conference she meets Harry Belefonte.
Upon her return to Paris on July 2001, she joins in a big festival with Archie Sheep.
Today her focus is on a great musical plan…and the search for a producer. So if you can hear this call, ring her! Thank you!
