Tristan has recently finished recording a five track, self titled EP which will be offically released later on in 2008. The EP was recorded, mixed and mastered by Erwin Musper at The Bamboo Room recording studio in Heighland Heights, Kentucky. Erwin has over thirty years worth of experience working with such greats as David Bowie, Chicago, The Rolling Stones, and Elton John, just to name a few.
The recording was also blessed with the participation of some world class musicians. Gary Winters wrote horn arrangements for the tracks "Traveling" and "Street Band", and played trumpet and flugel horn on the sessions. Marc Fields played trombone on the sessions, and Dwayne Irvin played the tenor sax and flute on the tracks. Ben Cochran, the bassist from Tristan’s former group Trifectafunk, laid down the bass tracks, and Katherine Monnig took care of the drums. Collectively this group of musicians have played and continue to play locally, nationally, and internationally with such greats as Ray Charles, Fred Hersch, Fred Wesley, Kenny Garrett, and the Temptations.
Tristan has recently relocated from Cincinnati, Ohio to San Francisco, California, where he will continue to pursue his career as a musician.
As three lives mesh their musical talents and passions, so forms the jazz and blues-infused piano rock band Trifectafunk. An appropriately named band featuring three products of the Cincy-scene, Trifectafunk capitalizes on a unique and fresh sound, driven by keyboards and an organ that drives the melodies into an ocean of sound with giant waves, furious storms and mysterious depths.
Trifectafunk is fueled by an inborn passion for music, and at times executes in a masterful capacity. The driving philosophy is simple: music is life, and, “If music is indeed life, Trifectafunk is living it up.†(Citybeat, 2/23)
The band is made up of front man and keyboardist-extraordinaire, Tristan Eckerson, bassist and vocalist Ben Cochran, and drummer Elliot Koop. Each has a distinct love of music, and each has a purpose for following their passion into what has been a rewarding starting point for the band. Formed in 2003 upon Tristan’s return from South Carolina, where he had been attending the College of Charleston, the three longtime friends got together as simply an instrumental jazz trio, but quickly formed their own style of music infused with hints of jazz, blues, rock and funk.
“I had a lot of original material worked up, and I had a very strong ambition to continue to perform. I had previously played with Ben Cochran and Elliot Koop in various informal settings, and I knew that we had a natural chemistry together, so I called them from Charleston, and we started to discuss putting a trio together,†offered Eckerson, the group’s lead singer. “A few months later I had moved back to Cincinnati, and we were already playing gigs as Trifectafunk.â€
It was a quick ascent in the Cincinnati music scene, as the trio quickly received notice. In 2005, the band was nominated for a prestigious Cincinnati Entertainment Award (CEA) for Best R & B/Funk Band. They also were tapped to play at the well-known Camp Buzz Music Festival in Oxford, Ohio, and finished in the finals at Emergenza. They have opened for such acts as Ekoostik Hookah, The Rumpke Mountain Boys, Bump, The Voodoo Organist and Freekbass.
