...THE MAN THAT MADE THE MEDAL..
" I was sitting on Tuttle Creek Lake one night, when I got to thinking. The Man That Made The Medal isn't just about soldiers, it's about any one who puts there life on the line in or out of a uniform. The medal that hangs upon a chest, displayed in a velvet lined box, or sits packed away in the bottom of a footlocker is a symbol of many things ,character, valor, honor, country, selflessness, and integrity. A person has a GOD-given free will to make decisions that will effect thier lives and other people's lives in a time of danger. In a moment, I realized that this song is about the police officer who responds to a crime that is being committed, the fireman that runs into a burning biulding , a paramedic who races to the scene of an accident to revive an auto crash victim, or the quick thinking civilian who runs out into the busy street to save a small child from passing cars. September 11th , 2001 brought light to those who sacrifice on a daily basis, when the firemen, police officers and paramedics went into the twin towers to save others, the passengers of flight 93 overtook the plane from the terrorist, the people who were in the Pentagon when the plane was flown into it, the soldiers and sailors, the marines , coast guard and national guardsmen that sacrifice thier lives to bring democracy and peace to another country...TO ME...ALL...ARE THE MEN AND WOMEN THAT MAKE THE MEDAL" Alton Miller
"What Are You Cryin' For".
I wrote this song, with my dear friend, Dusty Halvorson, in memory of my beautiful mother Sarah. She was a beautiful woman filled with caring and compassion.
My mother lived a very hard life. We were dirt poor, but we were a very happy family, we had everything we could have ever needed in my mother.
My mother suffered the last ten years of her life with the fatal disease Scleroderma. Scleroderma is a disease where the immune system begins attacking, tightening and hardening the skin of it's victim.
Ultimately, Scleroderma is not what killed my mother. She died of lung cancer which spread throughout her frail body.
I found out about my mothers illness a month before deploying to Iraq. I went on leave to spend her final days with her. When I arrived, I walked into my mothers bedroom with tears in my eyes. She looked at me with the same compassionate, caring smile I had known all of my life and said to me, "What are you cryin' for? I'm the one who's dying."
My mother died within a few days. She died in her home, surrounded by her family in a peace that I never thought would be possible.
My mother was with me every day that I spent in Iraq and she continues to be with me. I named my M1A1 tank "Archangel" after a St. Michael pendant that my mother gave to me before my deployment. You can see the picture in one of the slideshows on my profile.
Please visit my profile and listen to my tribute to my mother and the celebration of her life and the love she gave to so many.
You'll also find the lyrics to the song in my blog on my music page.
Thank you & God Bless,
Alton
