My friends call me Donnie, I'm 74 years old and I'm curently serving as the Secretaryof Defense, since January 20, 2001, under President George W. Bush. I really like having my old job back, I was the Yongest ever Secretary of Defense from 1975 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford. It seems appropiate to finish my political carreer here. When I leave i will have served the longest as Secretary of Defense/War than anyone else in US history. I did some work for Nixon but I don't really want to go into that here. I was also a representative, and as U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (1973-1974).
I was in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1957 as an aviator and flight instructor, training in North American SNJ basic trainers and later flying Grumman F9F Panther fighters. In 1957, I transferred to the Ready Reserve and continued Naval service in flying and administrative assignments as a drilling reservist until 1975. I transferred to the Standby Reserve when I became Secretary of Defense in 1975 and to the Retired Reserve with the rank of Navy Captain in 1989.
I also served as an official in numerous federal commissions and councils. For example, as Defense Secretary, I organized a committee to conduct a deep historical analysis of ancient empires to try and understand how they sustained power and influence.
