About Me

Mireya I. Ramos is of Dominican AND Mexican heritage. She was born in Montclair, California and her family moved to Puerto Rico when she was two (2) years old. Her passion for music began here. Her Mexican father, Armando, would lull her to sleep accompanied by the beautiful harmonies her Mother, Carmen, would create with her niece. Listening to Mariachi and different kinds of Latin-American music is an everyday occurrence for Mireya’s family. In San Juan, Puerto Rico, her family owned a Mexican restaurant where her father would sing Mexican folk songs while strolling from table to table. As her Mother noticed her passion for music, Mireya was enrolled in the San Juan Children’s Choir and also had private violin lessons. When the family moved to New York, Mireya became part of an ensemble called the Mariachi Angeles de Puebla. Her experiences with Mariachi music have enriched her music vocabulary and inspired her to explore other kinds of music. Mireya recently performed at the Dominican Republic Jazz festival in Santiago de los Caballeros featuring Accordion Superstar El Prodigio AND Cuban favorite Chucho Valdez. In June, 2007, Mireya notably accompanied Omar Sosa at the Blue Note in New York. Mireya performs regularly still with the Mariachi Angeles de Puebla AND an educational group called, Mexico Beyond Mariachi. Mireya’s band called MOVIMIENTO performed in January, 2008 at the Highline Ballroom in New York City and will perform at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in May, 2008. The Latin music she cherishes continues to her inspire her musicianship, fans and family.www.myspace.com/mireyaines
