About Me

My Life through the Lens: Elaine Eversley Born in New York City to a Panamanian father and a Puerto Rican mother, and raised in Puerto Rico, Elaine's passion for photography and her culture is clear. Returning to New York in 1988 at age eighteen, Elaine enrolled at Hostos Community College, graduating with an Associates degree in Liberal Arts. She immersed herself in the field of photography and became committed to expanding her education in photography, and became a tutor for the performing arts and photography departments of Hostos Community College. Elaine has continued to explore her creative interest in photography during the last twenty years. Her photographs have been published in the New York Post and her photographs of Puerto Rican music and dance events have been exhibited in small galleries throughout New York and Texas, and El Museo Eugenio Maria de Hostos in Puerto Rico. In 2005, she was featured in an exhibit at Camaradas, a small gallery in El Barrio, a Latin section of Spanish Harlem in New York displaying her images on traditional dance and music. Elaine also formed part of the Hostos Community College First Alumni Art Show in 2006, displaying Puerto Rican Folk Art, and she has been part of the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures in Houston, Texas. In 2005, Elaine focused on photographing Afro-Latino traditional bands based in New York, such as Los Pleneros de la 21, Yerbabuena, Alma Moyo, Yayas, Illu Aye and Kalunga. In 2006, she took on the task of photographing an all city (NY) event regarding African and Latino traditional music, dance, and art festivals, which included portraits and still photography of participants displaying real emotions. In 2007, Elaine Eversley had the opportunity to travel to Panama with the “Taller Portobello Norte”, a team of emerging and established artists and scholars working towards creating a cross cultural and multidisciplinary exchange of ideas and inspirations. During this trip, she had the opportunity to gather a collection of images from "El Festival del Diablo" in Portobello, Panama. She was also able to bring to life Bomplenazo 2007, an activity that is supported by the Bronx Council for the Arts, recognized by the Latin Jazz festival organizers, and an event that has even been awarded funds by the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors for celebrating the African and Latin roots of the musical culture of the South Bronx. In February 2008, she traveled to the Caribbean to cover Luz del Batey. An event that focuses on challenging models of international solidarity within marginalized communities by contributing cultural and media resources that aid towards their self-empowerment. This event includes setting up media workshops, cameras and skills in the hands of communities to use as they see fit, and providing media and cultural support to global communities of African descent to tell the stories of their own culture and history, in their own voice and seen through their eyes. This activity was shot in the GaGa carnival in the Batey Kou-Jack, La Romana in the Dominican Republic.Get your layout at Myspace Layouts
