About Me

Myspace Layouts - Myspace Editor

My mother-in-law Joan makes 1940s / 50s clothes from vintage patterns. She can do dresses, trousers, dungarees, skirts and tops for women, and newsboy caps and wide or zoot suit-style trousers for men. Everything is tailored to fit. Check out her myspace page by clicking the banner below :)

Welcome to my myspace page! It's difficult to sum yourself up in a couple of sentences, so I'll leave it at this for now - good at; dancing, drawing, making little men out of silver foil, playing chopsticks on piano. Bad at; driving, looking after plants, eating with chopsticks.

I teach 1940s & 50s jive dancing in Brighton and Worthing, so if you live nearby, you can come to our lessons. Click here to see the website - www.brighton-jive.co.uk .

If you don't live nearby, you can buy our DVD, suitable for beginners or improvers, and filmed at three great local vintage locations and including lots of instruction and also inspiring freestyle dancing. Click on the DVD to find out more and to see a video clip!

I love collecting vintage clothes, especially dresses and shoes. I don't even wear a lot of the shoes, because they're in too good a condition and it would be such a shame to trash them dancing.
I am a complete ebay fan. I'll buy a whole ton of 40s & 50s stuff, then feel guilty about having spent all the money that should have gone on sensible things like food and petrol, and put a whole ton of other stuff on there to sell. Kind of cancels each other out, don't you think?

If you're ever stuck for what to get me if it's my birthday or you're just feeling especially generous - buy me these! I will be happy forever.

I like books on vintage hairstyles, especially if they're a bit crazy like this one.

This booklet from 1949 has instructions on how to do your Hollywood make-up with Max Factor products - there are 3 shades of lipstick in the range and they are all red - clear red, blue red or rose red. Wow, such choice! But hey, who needs any other colour anyway?

For the last 4 years, Gee and I have run a weekly 1940s / 50s record hop, with various DJs including Lucky Phil, Slick Nick, Speedy Rob, Lucy Lou and Neil. Here's the flyer:

I am also one half of Brighton Jive, running 1940s / 50s jive dancing courses and events in the area.

My Interests

1940s / 50s jive dancing, trying to do vintage hairstyles, buying / selling things on ebay, hunting out vintage clothes/ anything Art Deco/ CC41 clothing & furniture, trying to make dresses, drawing, painting, making things, taking photos, Dutch salt licorice, sunbathing (turning into one big freckle), trying to play piano duets with my mum, nearly killing myself practising aerials in the garden with Gee, having a nice cup of tea, oh and occasionally a blue drink that makes me go doo-lally.

I'd like to meet:

Free spirits and happy people, people into the 1940s / 50s scene, dancers, musicians, artists, preferably not psychos.

Music:

Mainly 1940s & 50s - big band swing, western swing, rhythm & blues, some rock'n'roll & rockabilly. I like certain songs rather than everything someone has done, so here goes some current favourite songs; 'Sing me a swing song' with Ella Fitzgerald, 'Rocking Little Tune' with Bill Haley, 'Doin' the Jive', 'Little Lil', 'Who said shorty wasn't coming back', 'Sing Sing Sing', lots more, will add soon.I also like anything with a calypso style beat to do the limbo to (nobody has beat me yet..... challengers welcome!)

Movies:

Gee is always trying to get me to watch old black & white films, which is fine if they have dancing in or inspiring clothes / hairstyles, but many of the obscure ones seem to have no plot....zzzz. Other than that there's What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, the one where the guy can read women's thoughts is funny (what's it called??). I saw Happy Feet recently - I'm sure it's meant for kids but I thought it was great...!

Television:

Hmm.... don't get much time to watch TV, but when I do, am quite partial to the kind of programmes where I can shout out the answers like a moron.

Books:

Do newspapers count? I do have a thing for newspapers...
