Nacio en Sta. Marta, Barranquilla(Colombia), el 2 de septiembre de 1961.With his frizzy shock of almost luminous orange hair, Carlos Valderrama was always going to catch everyone's eye. But it was his sublime touch and practically supernatural vision that elevated him to captain his country in three World Cups over the 1990s.Regarded as one of the world's best in his position over the past decade or so, Valderrama made his debut for Colombia in October 1985, losing 3-0 to Paraguay. The midfielder was soon to establish himself firmly in the national side, winning the captaincy early on.Valderrama came of age in 1990, when he dribbled past several players to set up an injury-time equalizer for Freddie Rincon against West Germany. That crucial point put Colombia into the second phase of Italia '90.He is widely touted as the mastermind of Colombia's astonishing World Cup qualifier in 1994, when in a clash of the titans, it hammered the mighty Argentine side 5-0 in Buenos Aires. Glory beckoned, but a loss to the host United States helped send the fancied Colombians home after the first round.The Colombians disappointed again in 1998 when they failed to make it past the first round in France.
